I've got an eMachines M6811 notebook that I bring to LAN parties. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the performance (A64 3400+ 2.2GHz 1MB L2, Radeon 9600 64MB, 512MB RAM) except for in a few conditions. Because the HDD is only 4200 RPM, it takes forever to load some games. Specifically, level loading in UT2K4 takes about 4x as long as a desktop machine. Does anyone have any ideas for how to remedy this situation, both in general in all load times and specifically in UT2K4? I'm not going to be replacing the HDD, so that solution is out.

Your best bet is to replace that POS hard drive, unfortunately. You might want to order an external hard drive that has a usb 2.0 or firewire interface that has a faster drive in it, but that's liable to be more expensive than just replacing that POS 4200 rpm drive with a 5400 or 7200 rpm notebook drive.

There is nothing you can do besides keep it defragged or replace it. The seek time is limited by the rotational speed. Its almost twice as slow as your desktop....so its gonna have almost twice the seek times.
