windows can not find C:/Program

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
Hi there
I am having a windows xp professional edition at home. It was working fine untill I updated my antivirus software. Once the live upadte is finished it asked me to reboot my pc, which I did...But I got an error message after that saying "Windows cannot find 'C:\Program' make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start Button, and then search."

I uninstalled and reinstalled my antivirus software. I tried to find the information about this error on the web as well as microsoft's website but no success. I dont have MSN or AOL messenger installed which also can cause this error as I noticed some users have that. I went to check a event viewr on windows and when I search more it gave me ( i am not sure that this links to the same error message) a hint that a .dll files/ or data files may be deleted !!!! But it does not say which .dll files or datafiles are missing...

any help is greatly appreciated
thanks
kalpesh

Try a repair installation (gah! I sound like a broken record) and reinstall your AV.

Well could be a startup entry that got screwed up or something.

Try this. Start > Run > Type "msconfig" and hit enter > Go to the startup tab > hit Alt+PrtScn (will take a screenshot of the active window) > Open MS Paint > Hit Ctrl+V > Save it and upload it here

Ok, that's a crapload of stuff. There's probably alot of it that you don't need. Try booting into safe mode and see if you have the problem (restart, press F8 after the bios screen and select safe mode with networking). If you don't get the problem, then it's obviously some program that can't startup.

I forgot to mention that I already tried booting in safe mode, but the error still occurs.
    thanks for taking interest.
If I dissable the choices in startup option in "msconfig" , how it will affect my PC??

It shouldn't affect anything. I have only 5 or 6 programs that runs on startup and about 30 odd programs are disabled on startup.

Just keep what you want at startup and thats it
