Noob here needs some help, first time MB install

edited December 2004 in Hardware
ok first off im proud of myself for installing a new motherboard all by myself without starting the house on fire or burning up my processor. My problem is when i restart the computer it hangs. If the computer boots from being completely off i get no problems at all and boots up normally. When I restart the computer it hangs on detecting IDE in the very beginning of bios. So everytime I restart the computer I have to completely power down the system. It has up to date bios and still acts this way. Installing new drivers and updates is now a complete pain in the a$$ seeing how I have to sit around to turn off the computer then boot up. Any ideas?

The OS probably didn't quite like the fact that the whole motherboard was replaced. I would guess to get a stable system you would have to do a system reinstall. If it hangs on detecting the ide at the bios you might see if there is a bios update for the motherboard, a bios configuration thing, or a failing hard drive.

I did a complete new WinXp install, Im running off 2 Sata drives and no Ide hdd. Maybe this will help. Heres what happens.

    1. Turning computer on - Graphics card info pops up
    2. Bios Info pops up
    3. Dual DDr Enabled pops up
    4. Detecting IDE pops up
    5. Detects DVD-rom on IDE 1 and the goes on to detect the SATA drives and I go on to play some Doom 3.

Now if computer is restarted not turned off.

    1. Graphics card info pops up
    2. Bios info pops up
    3. Dual DDr enabled pops up.
    4. Detects DVD-rom on IDE 1
    5. Detecting IDE Drives pops up

    6. Hangs on number 5.

Why does Detecting IDE come up after DVD-rom is detected and hangs?

That's before the OS is even recognized. It sounds like a warm restart problem of some kind. It may be a BIOS issue. Try getting an updated BIOS.

I didnt know you had reinstalled xp fresh. Yes I agree with Cyclonite. Get the latest bios and then see what happens. What type of mobo is it?

Go into the BIOS and check settings.
It will prob be set to defaults after the flash.
You may need to tweak the settings to match your set-up.

I have the MSI K7N2 Delta2-LSR. I think i might of found a fix. I read this at another forum.

    Stas,
I've been fighting this same no-warm boot problem for two days now
(just built this system <#>). Everything was fine at first and then all of
a sudden the system would not re-boot on "restart" or auto reboot after
installation of programs. Well after searching MANY MANY forums, I came
across a suggestion , supposedly from an MSI tech, that says to
increase the AGP voltage to 1.60.
And what do ya know?? NO MORE
    PROBLEMS!! Now I noticed you're running a Radeon 9700Pro 128Meg (Just
like I am) but what about your PSU?? I have an Antec True 480watts.
Give it a try. Hope this cures what ails your rig.

    Modoc.
