IE mail = 64 browsers open

edited December 2004 in Science & Tech
Hello there, and Happy New Year.

I have a problem and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When I am browsing the web, and click on someone's "email us" option, I get an error message that says something to the affect of " not properlt installed", and I look in the taskbar to find that I have 64 pages open.
I habe XP SP2 and Outlook., and I do have Outlook as the default email program under the Tools > IE options > Programs.......

Thanks again, and you guys do a great job and offer a wonderful service.

Joe

sounds like spyware or something. run spybot search and destroy, ad-aware, do a full virus scan, then run hijack this in safe mode and post the log here.

Thanks for your speedy reply and help. I have finished with the Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Nortan scans, but am not sure how to run HijackThis in Safe Mode. D I re-boot and hold F8?

Did the other programs find anyting? Did you delete anything that they found? The HJT log looks clean from what I can see, but others here would know better to be honest. The only thing that looks suspicious to me is this entry:

    O9 - Extra button: RemindU - {16BF42FD-CA0A-4f48-819D-B0343254DD67} - file://C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU\System\Temp\upromise_script0 .htm (HKCU)

But then I think my wife and I participate in this UPromise thing which pays back a little bit of your college loans every time you buy groceries, not sure if that's what it's doing there.

Barring that this is a spyware problem, try installing another mail client and setting that as the default to see if it does the same thing. I know you don't want me to tell you to switch mail clients, but you might find you like another more than OE anyhow. Also, maybe there's an entry in add/remove programs that'll let you uninstall OE and then you can use Windows Update to re-install it. Hell maybe after you set another program as default and then switch the default back to OE it might work.

Ditch IE and go with firefox. Then, reinstall OE from microsoft.com and you should be in good shape. BTW, you can import all of your settings from IE to Firefox. It will also cut down on your hijackthis log too.
