Do I need to reinstall?

Hello there,

I am curious if a reinstall is necessary, because when I try my PC does not recognize that I have 2 HD that is could be installed on.

Anyway, this is what I know is wrong with my PC...

1.) I get the error message D:\ is not a Win32 device (D: is my cd-rom)
2.) HSA
3.) CWS ( CWShredder says I am fine but when I run Ad-aware, I usually see between 5000 and 9000 new critical files, all of which are under the Malware Cool Web Search)

Please help me, I don't know much about installing a new O/S

Thank you,
Alex

What OS? Unless you really want to do a fresh installation, you should try posting about your adware/spyware problems in the SVT section.

    Hello there,

I'm sorry but I don't know how to check/change that. I'm really new to hardware biz. If you could help me out or at least point me in the general direction of where I can get help on how to do that I would appreciate it very much. Sorry about that.

    Peace,
    Alex

wow thats a lot of spyware. untill you get rid of that theres really no use to even try to fix your computer. run ad-awareSE and spybot-sod then download highjackthis put it in a permanate folder that your going to keep and post a log in the SVT section here.

if D:\ is your cd rom then maybe it's connected to the wrong end of the cable or something.
Is the cdrom detected in your bios setup?
Do you have seperate ide ports that you can connect each drive?

If you're using a cable with 3 connections on it then you need to determine which end connects to the motherboard and which end connects to the drive.
Usually the end that is farthest from the other two connectors on the cable goes to the motherboard then the farthest connector from that end goes to the drive. The middle cable goes to another drive but I don't recommend using it unless you absolutely have to.
Just repeat that procedure for the c:\ drive and d:\ drive and you should be ok as far as the cables go. You might even have a bad cable.

If you're daisy chaining the hard drives, you need to set the dip switches. The first one on the cable coming from the controller(mother board) is probably already set to CS(cable select) the second will need to be the slave. Look next to where the ribbon cable is plugged inot the drive and there should be 4 pins, with a jumper over one of the sets of pins. Look at the bottom on the drive for some small insription pointing at each set of pins. The second drive should be "S" for slave. That may resolve your problem.

OK.. Swilbur, they're jumpers. Not dipswitches. You either set both drives to cable select or to master/slave.

Private_Snoball: I believe the jumpers are located next to the power connector. The settings vary from manufacture to manufacture so I suggest searching your hard drive's manufacturer's site although most HDD's have a little diagram on the top of them to show you how to put it. Set both HDD's accordingly.

    Hello there,

    It's fixed now!!!
Thank you to everyone who helped. It happened to be the IDE cable was in the wrong port ;D;D;D;D;D;D . I had it plugged into the HDD port. I guess people like me are the reason they color code everything. Thanks again to everyone.

    Peace,
    Alex
