MSI 865PE Neo2 PFS and Raid/SATA

Recently acquired this mobo (MSI 865PE Neo2 PFS) and would like to try my hands on SATA with it. It has been running on an old spare HD i have.

I have 2 Maxtor Diamondmax10 200G that i would like to use with it. The main problem I have run into are these:

1. Can I run both ide and SATA drives together (both seem to be mutually exclusive on BIOS settings)

2. If i enable the SATA drives will the DVD drives still work so I can install the OS from there?

3. Will the OS have to be installed prior to RAID drivers or not?

The main reason why i want to clarify these issues before fummbling around till i find the answer is that it has boosted my Folding production and dont want to lose that for any length of time.

Thanks for the Help and wishing everyone a Happy New Year

    Hi, Happy New Year!

    1) Yes

    2) Yes

    3) If you are installing onto a disk on the SATA RAID controller you will need to supply the OS setup program with drivers. If you don't want to install onto a disk on the SATA RAID controller, you can wait to install the drivers until after the OS is fully installed, but I recommended doing the below either way.

Once you've initiated the OS setup, (presuming it's Windows XP or 2000) you will simply need to press F6 at the very start when prompted. This will tell the OS setup program that you're using a third party controller type. e.g. not typical PATA. It will then eventually prompt you for a driver disk for the SATA RAID controller. If you don't supply the OS setup with the correct driver, the OS setup program will not be able to detect, format or install onto your SATA hard drive/s or RAID array.

Any further question, don't hesitate to ask.

    Cheers

Hey spinner. Thanks for that. Hope you had good holidays.

One of the other problems is that the mobo did not come with instalation disks for any RAID drivers. Not on the documentation that it would either. So do i have to get a third party RAID driver? Which would you recommend for this board?

Okay well after a bit of research it would seem you, the end user, is required to make your own floppy disk for use with the OS setup.

It involves using the command prompt to extract files and stuff, it's a bit of a lengthy procedure if you haven't done it before, so I've done it for you.

The drivers (in a basic .zip file) should, once extracted to a floppy disk, be the ones you need to use during the OS setup as desribed above.

Let me know if you have any trouble. I've uploaded the driver package to my web server, I've PM'd you the link.

    Cheers
