Program command problems.

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
Hello software forum-

I think I am having a double problem. Currently I am working out an HSA situation in the SVT forum and making great progress (thankyou SpywareShooter). However this situation has caused other problems with my laptop. Search button doesn't work on the start menu, Task bar keeps resetting to autohide even though the autohide box is unchecked, task buttons keep showing up on the desktop(probably because task bar is messed up), can't move desktop icons, won't let me print (says I don't have printer installed, which I do), . Can't drag and drop. Keep getting "cannot find shell.dll" massage when I try certain commands. I am sure there are other things I haven't discovered yet. I am not a pc master with this and need some helpful advice on where to start.

Thankyou in advance for your attention.
-Jeff

Have you also checked for viruses? What OS?

    Thanks for replying.

Throughout this whole action packed adventure of trying to remove HSA I have been using AVG 6.0, Adaware, Spybot and have had this on my laptop for about a year now. Thought I was protected. Had AVG set to run automatically every night for the last year. Do you recommend other anti-virus? I did just buy Norton SystemWorks 2005 yesterday for another Desktop PC. Do you think that would be effective? How can I be 100%sure I have no viruses. It seems as though I was already operating under a false pretense.

    Dell Inspiron 5150
OS is XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
    IE 6.0 SP2

Should I wait until I get this HSA situation cleared up before I mess around with fixing programs. I know that seems a little impatient but I am selfemployed and I use my laptop extensively for business. Work is piling up on me bad.

    Thanks again for your help.

I would've suggested system restore but that would bring back your spyware problems. You could try doing a repair installation.

Well after backtracking my steps from trying to undo the HSA problem I think I figured out why I'm having the following issues now.

-printer won't print (print spooler service not working)
    -can't drag &drop
    -search button doesn't work
    -help menu button doesn't work
    -can't get to email
    -properties boxes don't work
-some windows don't show all info
-task bar is always hidden even when autohide box is unchecked
-task buttons appear on desktop instead of taskbar

I think in the process of trying to get rid of HSA I accidently deleted or disabled something to do with the RPC service in the registry. Now when I go to the services.msc it shows RPC is on automatic but I can't bring up the properties box to see the status whether it is enabled or disabled. I have run AVG, Spybot, Adaware and evrything looks clean. Any ideas on how to get out of this enormously frustrating problem. I thought about doing the file transfer from old computer to new computer and just dropping the files on a disc then reloading the OS and all the other software then transferring the disc files back. Hopefully that would restore the registry back to the state it was in before I screwed it up. Any ideas or feedback if this would work. I am at my wits end with this, please help.

    Thanks
