Needing Help With MS-DOS/Won't play cd's

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
My mother's computer for some reason won't play cd's anymore. We've tried games to using a cd in order to install a new printer. It keeps saying the MS-DOS will not let it run. Why is this? On her computer we can't even find the MS-DOS. On mine you can. But I don't really know what MS-DOS is all about. So, I don't know what to do with it. And what can we do to make her cd's work again? We need to get this printer installed.
Thank you.

what operating system is your mom using?

Windows XP, and we we're told that older versions of cd's sometimes won't play with XP. Is there anything we can do to get this printer installed? Thanks

Also, this printer she has is an Epson Stylus Color 400, I was using my disc for an Epson Stylus 440 to try and install this because she doesn't have a disc for hers. Is it a waste of time? Will this even work in the first place? So I need to know if this will even work, and why MS-DOS is stopping cd's from running. Thank you very much.

just go to www.epson.com to find the correct printer software and download it directly to your mom's computer. then install the drivers and hook-up the printer.....

as far as ms-dos stopping cd's from playing on your mom's winxp pc, i don't know what to tell you. somebody correct me if i am wrong, but i thought ms-dos wasn't even included with winxp??? seems more like a problem with the optical drive than the non-existent ms-dos....what is the exact error message you get when trying to play a cd?

MS-DOS has nothing to do with WinXP - WinXP does not include any form of DOS.

I heard that too. The exact message we're getting is this:

C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows Applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

That is what comes up everytime we try to run a cd.

go to my computer, then right click on the CD and hit explore, find a setup.exe file or something similiar and try running it.

I suspect spyware. First, read this, and then post a log here.

It sounds like they are trying to install dos drivers for the cd. There is no dos.

He just needs to go to epson and get the printer drivers for XP like was mentioned above. You don't do things the same way with XP as win98 and you can't use old drivers.

    Hello there,

I had the same issue a little while ago, and my solution was very simple. If you have unplugged anything inside the computer check to make sure the cd's IDE cable is in the right spot. I had mine in the HDD slot when I checked (running HD's on RAID) and it was fixed afterwards. I don't think there are many as dumb as me ;D;D but it's worth a shot to check.

    Good luck!
