Getting my own dot.com

So I wanna get my own .com, .org, whatever.

So I need to do two things right?

1.) Register my domain name
2.) Get hosting for my domain name

I guess I wanna know if anyone has any suggestions for companies to use for these two services. Last time I did it I used NetworkSolutions.com for registering, can't remember which hosting I used.

I also forgot, how do you link the two together? Do I just tell the domain registerer the hosting that I'm using? What information do I need to give them so they can tie the hosting and domain name together?

thanks :mullet:

Best bet is to register a domain through the host, then all gets connected right away. Most hosts offer registration as well, though pricing can vary widely.

Otherwise, you can register through any registrar, then give the domain and the contact details to the hosting company, and they will do the verification request to the registrar. The registrar than contacts you via the contact info you filled out, and asks you to approve the request, This process can slow things down by a day or two.

Google domain name registrars, and you will get a zillion hits. Network solutions is good, but they are not the cheapest. Happy hunting....

I register through 1and1.com - currently they're giving me a free 3-year hosting package. They only charge $5.99 per year for registration, though. Their hosting isn't cheap for their normal packages, I think.

Send a pm to primesuspect ... he hosts this site, as well as other forum member's pages.

Registering the domain will cost around $10 - $15 for a year. I recommend dotster, others like godaddy. It doesn't really matter who you use. (Just don't use network solutions - they charge something insane like $30)

Then you pick a host. We host several people from this site, including this site itself, and I'm sure you'll have lots of happy testimonials from our customers.

There are super-budget hosts out there, like $5 a month or whatever. Just remember you definitely get what you pay for.

PM me if you're interested in having us host your site. I would love to have you as a customer. We appreciate all of our customers, and it shows in our customer service :)

Oh, to answer your other question. When you register the domain, you'll be asked for your DNS servers. You'll get that info from your hosting company. For example, if you use us as a host, you will put our name servers in there.

Actually, Brian, based on the quote you gave me last year it seems like with sarcnet, you get much more than you pay for.

    I use www.readyhosting.com

initial set up was $149 for the year, included domain registration, plus the hosting package.

    500mb web space (unmetered)
unlimited email and a whole slew of other stuff, good service, only 3 problems in the last 3 years that have lasted more than 2 hours.

i think i'm going go with 1and1, i got another recommendation from another forum I goto. The prices seems pretty good, and that way i'll register with them and not have any problems with send information to each other. Thanks guys

By the way Ghoosdum, should I got with the 1&1 Home package? It's 4.99 a month, i says no hidden fees, so i guess no registration fee.....1gb hosting, and 25 gb monthly bandwidth. Includes one domain name (.com .net .org only)

I quit 1&1 and went with Ace-host so I am commited to them for a year or I would be with primesuspect. Remember sometimes a few extra dollars can go quite a way in service and support.

He seems to give a little more leadway on bandwidth then the rest.

I don't know how good their Home package is - but if you're just putting together a basic site, it's probably just fine. I got their professional package free for 3 years, otherwise I'd be with Sarcnet right now ;). But I probably use more server-side features than you would (since you're looking at Home package on 1and1). 1and1 is pretty good (but not absolute) for uptime, we've only noticed 2 problems in about a year, and their customer service is OK, but not great. For a basic host you would probably be just fine with their Home package.
