Flashing 9800 NP Hynix Memory to 9800 Pro !!!!! UPDATE !!!!!

edited January 2005 in Hardware
Ok this needs its own thread or later needs to be incorporated into the original thread.

I just recently purchased a Saphire 9800 NP 128mb.

It seems that some of these cards come with Hynix memory, as mine did.

Dont panic yet its not as bad as infineon memory but not as good as samsung.

More importanly though some of these cards are 128 bit , again 128bit NOT 256bit !!!!!!!!!!

As mine is :(

Here is how you tell from a far, the memory chips will be the older DDR style big rectangle chips and NOT the newer DDR2 square chips. This will let you know what they are but not if the card is 128bit or 256bit.

To find that out look at the part number (PN) on the card itself.
If your PN is
PN 1024-1C47-00-SA its a 128bit card
If your PN is
PN 1024-2C47-00-SA its a 256bit card

I know for a FACT that you can NOT flash the 128bit card to a 9800pro.
I tried twice and its like the memory was cranked up WAAAAAAAY to high with insane artifacts and barely anything is viewable.

**quick tip**
If you flash your card and it does this and you dont have a pci card then dont panic.
Just restart with your ms-dos boot disk, wait for the noise to stop, switch disks, type what your supposed to (god I hope you backed your original bios) and restart.
I had to do this 3 times.

OK GOOOOOOOOOOOOD NEWS
The 9800 Pro EZ is a 128bit 9800 pro, the memory is right on target for what these cards should be able to do and you should get more performance.
The only problem is......... I havent found the 9800 pro ez bios yet.

Once I do and try it I will update the thread.

If I am unsucessful I will update with my max overclock.
We (us hynix memory peoples) can then share what our cards can overclock to.
My Hynix is
412a
HY5DU281622ET-33

acording to www.hynix.com this is 300mhz memory, I cant find the ns rating for it.

After trying some more I found 1 bios that works.
But the clock speeds are the same. It does say 9800 pro however
I will upload it with this post.

I am still gonna try some more and try to find that 9800 pro ez bios.

After a lil more testing I found that I can get to the 9800 pro default speeds with the flash bios I included in this post.

I was running default 380/680 but I finally started getting some artifacts.
My bench went from 12217 to 12996 with 3dmark 01

I now bumped the mem down to 640 and its rock solid.

I have ran 6 benchs in a row with 0 artifacts. I am not sure how much further the core and mem will go because I havent tried but I think the core still has alot of life in it, I am not too sure about the memory though since its only ddr and not ddr2

why am i the only person to have artifacts based off the core being too high?? stresses me out like nothing else.. clean heatsink and fan working properly, case open or closed...

I didnt try to overclock it until I changed the bios.

Try that bios I posted and see what happens.

Also what brand is your card?

I know nvidia has a "flip chip" program that I call a "**** Chip" program where they take their chips that dont perform good and allow crap companys to sell them with crap ram and still call them the same card (bs imo) but as far as I know ATI does NOT allow this. That is why I buy ATI.

After getting screwed on 3 nvidia cards that where all clocked much lower then they should be I said F U nvidia.

here are some examples of cards I bought and what they where clocked at.
FX 5200 should be 250/400 was 200/350 WTF?????
FX 5800 should be 400/800 was 350/600 WTF again?????
FX 5900 should be 400/850 was 375/800 and wouldnt flash to 5950 ultra like most of them do.

I didnt know that the cards where underclocked because they didnt say the clock speeds when I bought them. The only reference I was using was what was on tomshardware.com.

So even if you cant overlock you should at least be greatfull that you got the correct speeds.

Nvidia blows for the mid end consumer thats looking for a cheap version of a good model.
With ATI a 9800 is a 9800 (well there are 128bit and 256bit but at least you know what your getting)
Even with the 9800pro if you get one that underclocked its called a 9800proEZ to help identify that its underclocked and not a true 9800pro.

well mine is a BB ATI 9800 256bit 128mb card with samsung memory.. 3.3 i think.. i flashed it fine and it helped me get about 25mhz more for memory, i was stuck at 320 before flashing. my core then was 365 and no artifacts, but now anything over 360 core will artifact while the memory is fine at 345. i have an antec tru430 so it shouldnt be my psu.. oh well, ill have to live with my sub stock 9800pro for a 9800 price..

Although I have mostly water cooling in my system I just picked this up
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-116-013&depa=0

Until I can afford a water block for my gpu and custom make some water blocks for the ram.

For $35 you cant go wrong and it gets great reviews.

mega -- i have the newer version of the card, 128, but i have samsung memory. regardless, the bios flash didn't work. i did what you said and flashed it back with only listening to the A drive spin, but it still hasn't worked. any suggestions?

Well what brand is your card ?

Do you have the right bios for your card ? i.e. did u back up your original bios properly ?

If not you can probably find your bios here
    http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/

Once you find your right bios I can make you a bios for your 9800.

Just let me know the highest clock speed you can run and the highest memory and I will make you a bios that reads 9800pro with the new clock speeds.
