Download Accelerator Plus Ads

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
I downloaded this a few months ago and after using Ad Aware, Spy bot, and Panda on a regular basis I just cant shake this program. I have tried everything I can think of.

I get 10 different entries of it numbered 1-9 in zip files.

Downloadacceleratorplusads.zip C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\Spybot-Search And Destroy\Recovery

The same thing just in files .zip1-.zip9 along with the main file in Start Menu\Program Files

Can anyone tell me why I cant eradicate this and if it is in fact spyware or not?

    The folder it is in:

    C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\Spybot-Search And Destroy\Recovery

is storage folder for Spybot S&D. The items have been placed there from where they were found by Spybot. Think of it like a Recycle Bin specifically for Spybot.

In Spybot, if you click the Recovery icon, you will see these items, and can restore them if you choose. So, No, you do not have a spyware problem with these items.

The problem with using multiple apps to scan for problems is that one app does not necessarily recognize another one's backup/recovery/recycler folder, so it will report items it finds in these other folders as being a problem.

Which program is reporting this to you? You should be able to set an "ignore" to ignore each of those items, so that they won't come up on future scans.

Spybot is the program reporting it to me. Along with the DSO Exploit it is an "Unfixeable". When i do a general scan for Download Accelerator i get those 10 zip files and a

    Download Accelerator C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs as well.

Why does Spybot hold onto this program instead of deleting it like the rest? It was a downloaded program and not anything that i need. Is there no way to make it nonexistent?

Regarding the DSO Exploit thing, read this thread.

Regarding Spybot reporting the entries, you can purge the items in your recovery folder by clicking the Recovery button on the left hand side of the Spybot window, putting a checkmark next to the items, then clicking the Purge Selected Icons button at the top of the window.

Or you can just manually delete them all from the folder C:\Documents and Settings\AllUsers\Application Data\Spybot-Search And Destroy\Recovery. Either way will work, they should be gone and not bother you any more. :)

    Let me know....

    Adware.DAP is:

    * A download accelerator product for Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, and Opera Web browsers.
    * Functions as a media viewer and FTP browser and allows the user to install games.
    * Installs a toolbar and browser helper object into the browser (Internet Explorer only).
    * Downloads ads to be displayed in your program window, your Internet Explorer toolbar, and through pop-up type advertising.

NOTE: Registering the application will stop the ads from displaying.

Like many free programs, you get what you pay for. If you pay nothing, then yuo are often agreeing to be served up advertising so that the developers can still make money from your usage.

If you have picked apart the startup entries to remove the adware components, you should see no BHO in IE, and no pop-up ads. However, it still has banner ads built into the main software itself. That's a fair trade-off.

I just personally don't see a lot of value in download accelerators. They really do not accelerate your download very much, and by opening extra processes on your computer they are slowing your system performance down. The ability to schedule download can be handy if you do a lot of downloads that can be scheduled, but that feature works best for dialup users who get discounted rates for off-peak hours. Most broadband users really do not benefit much from this feature, in my opinion.

spybot has completely removed the ads from it somehow and iv got the rest of the crap out of it i think. i use a version thats like 3 years old thats not supported any longer and had less ads in the beginning.
the only real reason i use it is because of the resume function. its flusterating to get kicked halfway thru a download and have to start all over. :bawling:
