Ok its official now. My heatsink fan completely died. I heard a strange beeping noise coming from my speakers and all of a sudden, my motherboard program popped up and showed no RPM's for my heatsink fan. I checked, and surely enough it wasn't spinning. I immediately turned off my computer for about 1/2 an hour, opened it up and unplugged the heatsink power cable, and pulgged it back in. It turned on but was decreasing in RPM's very quickly. Ok so now I officially am need a new heatsink. I need a recomendation for a decent heatsink. the most I'm willing to spend is around $40. PLEASE HELP!!! Any adice for a heatsink will do. I cant use my computer until I get a new one!!!!

I have an Asus k8v Se deluxe motherboard(socket 754) and an AMD athlon 64 3200+ processor

Yeah Gnomewizardd he says that first line of his post... I was going to write the same thing :p

tmh88 why don't you just buy a replacement fan rather than getting a whole new heatsink?

I too was attracted by the thread title to make a comment but refrained after reading the post ;)

And as Shivian said, why not just get a new fan? (assuming the fan's not an integrated part of the cooler).

The Gigabyte 3D Pro Cooler would be ideal for your CPU imo, I'm running one on my XP3200 and it doesn't go above 42C at full load.

I posted dead heatsink for help. I know heatsinks don't die, and only fans can..unless its a magical heatsink.

well anyway. I think that my heatsinks fan isnt dead afterall. I think that something happened to the port thing on the motherboard where you plug the heatsink fan into(whatever you call it). well anyway, I plugged the heatsink fan into a psu adapter, so now its getting power directly from the power supply, instead of through the motherboard. Well anyway all of the other places on the motherboard to plug fans into(i've tested) and the rpm's are around 3,000 and above. I plug any fan into the spot designated for the heatsink fan, and the fan will turn off in about 3-4 minutes.

I have a 450 watt powersupply, and all my voltage readings are not too low or high. Everything else runs perfectly, and I've had no power problems.

I'm only using 1 hd, 2 sticks of ram, vid card, a few fans, and the processor. Not much else to be draining power. So my conclusion is that somethings wrong with the spot to plug the cpu fan into.

also since I've had the heatsink fan plugged directly into the power supply, my cpu temp lowered like 10*F which = GOOD!!

I know alot of you that use these forums are amazing with computers, so if you can think of another explanation please say so.

I was planning on getting a new heatsink anyway because I currently am using the stock heatsink provided with the AMD athlon 64 3200+ processor, which does the job, but not to great. I wanted a new heatsink to keep my cpu even cooler

It's a long shot, and probably not correct, but I don't suppose you have any hardware monitoring software that has some crazy setting on it, causing the motherboard CPU fan socket to cut power off when a certain setting is reaching?

And again, if you're after a new cooler, Gigabyte 3D Rocket Pro, good price, good cooling and has 4 blue led's.

Or perhaps one of the Thermalright range of sinks with a fan of your choice...

As you can tell, I'm not the greatest with computers. I had cool & quiet enabled, so i disabled it, and i didnt try plugging the heatsink fan back into the motherboard yet, mainly because my cpu temp has been the lowest ever since i plugged it directly into the psu.

    thanks for the help.
