problem with sound card

edited January 2005 in Hardware
howdy all...

i'm new here and holding faith someone can offer some good advice.
i bought a 'new to me' PC and formatted the hard drive...installed my XP home edition...all went well and smooth except now i have no sound. been all over the net trying to identify sound card or find a driver or SOMETHING.
Even driverguide, which did back up all my drivers, hasn't helped any. In control panel under "sounds and audio devices" in both volume and sounds it says 'no audio device'. Now i did mess around on this machine before doing my new O.S. and there was sound...in fact better quality than my old PC. I've looked inside where the sound card should be and it's hard to tell if that's a card even...not like a modem or video card or anything i've seen before...just 2 silver box lookin' things that only say "FOXCONN". Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Tony

    more info needed

is it a prebuilt(ie dell, gateway, etc.), and what model, if it is

is the sound connections on a card, or built into the motherboard

well it is a pre built dell, yes...i dont wanna try taking out the "sound card" cause it looks like it may very well be attached...any cards i've seen before ie modem - i could plug in and out right? kinda expect a sound card would be the same? maybe not. any way - it's quite likely attached.
it's a dell dimension 4550 pentium 4 with an intel motherboard with code FW82801DB written on top of the biggest chip. Does that help?

thanks - i'm getting there now...a little slow...downloading SP2 at the same time. also i noticed that my old PC has that same code on it's chip...a dell too, obviously...i guess that probably doesn't matter though.
    i appreciate your help.

Well - still no sound...went to that site and downloaded the file - which seems to be a back up driver for everything Dell - half way through setting it up it tells me no sound card is installed and it shuts down. Go figure.

    which one did you download?

I think yours is the first one.

yep - that's the file i downloaded - then when i opened to extract the files and saw the 'final destination folder name' or whatever, i realized i already have that folder - guess it's just part of my system. But, like I said - it just tells me it can't complete set up because there is no sound card installed. I'll go try the second one and see how that goes. Come to think of it - the old PC did have a sound blaster card, if i recall right. this one just says Foxconn on it.

had to edit this cause now i realize that someone must have drugged me yesterday...i downloaded the SECOND one...probably cuase of recognizing the sound blaster name...duh. Off to try the other. I salute you for all your help Gibbons. Thanks.

    Yeehaw - that worked!!!

I don't know how you knew where to look but you did and now I can hear
the poker chips hit the table while I crank Suicidal
Tendencies - so cheers to you my friend. Greatly appreciated.

I do believe I'll log into this site everyday - maybe someday i'll
be of a help to someone - even if not i'll damn sure learn something.

    Thanks again.
