Few questions about this server.
Seen this in an online auction.
IBM INTELLISTATION Z PRO SERVER, TOWER, BLACK, INTEL XEON 3.06GHZ, 512MB RAM, 40GB HARD DRIVE, CD ROM DRIVE, FLOPPY DRIVE, ON BOARD SOUND/ NETWORK/ VIDEO, 64MB D-SUB PCI-X GRAPHICS CARD, 4X USB PORT, 1X FIREWIRE PORT, WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL WITH RECOVERY CD, KEYBOARD, MOUSE, POWER CABLE, D-SUB TO DUAL VGA CABLE, CD SOFTWARE & MANUAL ( MINOR MARKS & SCRATCHES ) ( P/N- N0881) ( OPEN )
Trying to find a bit of info through google does not give me the answers.
1. According to the info above, the OS is "WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL WITH RECOVERY CD". Not knowing anything about them, i was under the impression they had to have a server OS.
2. With the above specs, would it still run a second Xeon 3.06 proc?
3. I believe server ram is the registered type, limiting what can be used?
That is really all for now. Just got curious when i spotted this item. (was thinking FOLDING, lol).

Im not sure why XP is on there but it's the right kind of money, go for it.
Registered memory is used in multi processor setups and as this has a Xeon in it, that's why. Doesn't limit unless you want to overclock it.
WHAT............NO HT. Here i was dreaming of adding a second Xeon in HT doing another 4 WU's, hehehe. Bummer.
Right kind of money? Todate the next bid is for $1,010AUD. It is going up in $5 increments. Around that price i think it would be quite good. Problem is apart from folding, i would not know what to do with it.
Not interested in overclocking something like that and funds are tight at the moment. Spent too much on the other puter's. Should it be the "Steal of the Century", i'd be inclined to go for it though.
Next problem is extracting funds out of the Handbrake, lol.
Thanks for the feed-back.
Looks like the additional costs getting bigger all the time.
Though i haven't checked the prices for the OS's you mentioned, i can well imagine what it would be.
I think thats pretty cheap for what it is.
Tex
I ran XP on my dual xeon and all four cpu's showed correctly in the device manager.
Tex
That's right Tex. XP Pro is licensed for 2 physical processors and works just fine with HT enabled and the OS sees 4 virtual procs.
EDIT: Thrax was wrong, nanny-nanny-boo-boo!
Just joking with you Rob, I know that you don't do P4's.
Also, according to everything that Microsoft has said so far, it looks like they are going to look at dual core processors as 1 physical processor per socket too. That opens up a myriad of powerful possibilities for people with socket 939 or socket 940 A64 systems. Just imagine that you will have all the power and smoothness of a dual processor machine out of your present desktop system by simply buying a dual core proc and you won't have to upgrade the OS either. That will add quite a bit of power to dual proc A64 servers also, without having to upgrade to advanced server 2003.
Looks like the person with the highest bid has auto-adding setup. Price has come up a bit, though still ok, out of our range. Should not have spent so much to get more puters for the farm.
