dual monitor functionality from a single port?

I've noticed on ocassion that the ATI Display Panel has functionality for dual monitors, although my 9700pro AIW only has one port. I've found VGA / DVI cable splitters, and was just wondering whether its possible to pass two signals through that port, or if it would just put the same image up on two screens.

either way it would be cool, since I could compare my LCD and my CRT side by side.

but is there any way to do this??

    I don't believe so. I think the only AIW that will do dual monitors is the 9600 AIW, which has 2 outputs. I remember reading that in a review somewhere.
