    1. Download this tool called AboutBuster http://www.downloads.subratam.org/AboutBuster.zip

Unzip it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

    2. Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoft.de/english/default.shtml. Install and open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. Exit Adaware.

    3. Print out these instructions so you have them handy as most of the steps need to be done in safe mode and you may not be able to go online.

    4. Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    5. Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper". When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

    6. Reboot to Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode. To get back to normal mode just restart the computer as you normally would.

    7. Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll/sp.html#10001
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll/sp.html#10001
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll/sp.html#10001
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll/sp.html#10001
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll/sp.html#10001
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll/sp.html#10001
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll/sp.html#10001
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8321C97A-8D55-6B2C-CD27-699292B1BAC9} - C:\WINDOWS\apikq32.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ieki.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieki.exe
    O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cryj32.exe

and delete the following files if present.

    C:\WINDOWS\fjsey.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cryj32.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\apikq32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieki.exe

    8. Double click AboutBuster.exe that you downloaded earlier. Click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report(copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

    9. Scan with Adaware and let it remove any bad files found.

    10. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

    Temporary Files
    Temporary Internet Files
    Recycle Bin

    11. Reboot to normal mode, scan again with Hijack This and post a new log here.

    12. Finally, do an online scan at the following site. Let it remove any infected files found.
    Trend Micro (PC-cillin) - Free on-line Scan
    http://housecall.antivirus.com

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the AboutBuster report back here please.

Here is my new Hijack & About Buster logs...Everything was going ok in Safe until about step #10 where I couldn't type anything in the RUN box. I also couldnt save a copy of the about buster log, but it did say something about HSA removed, SW removed, etc. So I rebooted in normal mode, did the cleanup, and rebooted again. Now when I opened up my intenet to post this log, my internet opened up into Google. Does that mean something was fixed? I hope so!

Fix that entry and you should be all set. Are you still having any problems?
  • edited January 2005
Yes, there's still a prob...my husband just tried to sign in under his account and his internet still goes to about:blank. I don't understand this though, b/c I am the administrator of the computer. My internet under my account goes to the correct page. Also, when we log onto our own accounts, some big box comes up with all symbols and some writing. I don't really understand what this is either.
How do I go back and fix that other entry? Do I do the same process as before but click and delete just that file under Hijack?
    Thanks.

When you get the about:blank page is it just blank, or is there something there?

Please post a new hijackthis log.

Here's a new log...Sometimes there are words on about:blank, sometimes it is blank. The last time we checked there were words. Thanks!

I just ran Hijack under my husband's account and this is what came up...If I am learning something, I think the bad files are still here under his account. But again, I am the administrator of the computer, so how can this be? and how do I get rid of this? Thank you so much for all of your help.

I only have a single account on each computer, so I am not 100% sure of this. Every account has it's own section in the Registry, and it's own folder for documents and user data. Other than that, the files are available to any user who goes on the system, regardless of the account name. As acxjw.dll, the only malicious file in your log, is in the System32 folder, this is not the case. The file is not on his account, it is on all of them.

Fix those entries then find and delete acxjw.dll, reboot and post a new log.

Here is my most recent log. I did the procedure all over again. The R1 files that you told me to fix were not on there. I was afraid to erase 09 entry b/c that is of a spyware eraser program that I paid for that i am awaiting reimbursement for. I found the acxjw file and erased it. Also, the cryj32.exe and ieki.exe files were found again even though i deleted them yesterday. So i deleted them again. When we logged on under our accounts, a window would pop up that said symbols and some words. I found it to be something called Microsoft.hta...I just deleted anything I could find with that name. It seems to have stopped. My husband's account appears to be running ok now too.

THANKS TO BUCKEYE SAM & SPYWARE SHOOTER FOR YOUR WONDERFUL EXPERTISE. I COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT YOU!!!!!!!!! I'll let you know if there are any more probs.

There is a new variant of about:blank showing up that is nearly impossible to detect from a Hijackthis log. Which is why I asked what the page actually looked like. But it sounds like you're clean now. And your log looks good. Let us know if you have any more problems.
