32768 Kazaa Download limit?

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
I run Kazaa Lite. I set several files to download (of course allowing sharing) and then go to bed. By morning every one of the downloads - of different individual file sizes - stopped downloading at exactly 32,768kb. This happens often, though not always at 32,768. What is the cause and how can I fix the problem? Please help.

Not that familiar with it, but perhaps you have a max file size setting.

Would that be in Windows (I run in XP)? Because I didn't see any such setting in Kazza or Internet Explorer. If it is an Explorer or Windows setting, that could explain some other strange problems I experience. But I have downloaded entire Kazaa files of over 150,000kb at times in the past.

PS. The problem happened again last night. Several files stopped dowloading at different times but all at the same file size.

    4. Open sharing of warez, warez links, serial numbers, key codes, cracks for any and all software will be deleted and is otherwise prohibited. Also, please note that emulators are legal, but the games are only legal if they were distributed by the owner. Discussion of obtaining software or music illegally through P2P programs is considered a form of warez and will be likewise removed.

AFAIK, nothing in georgew's post contains anything about warez. Posting about a P2P program and it's problems, is not warez. If you post about download illegal files from it, then that's warez.

    A few more details:
There's no router on my end. I do use broadband cable - if that makes any difference. I also use McAfee Security with Personal Fire Wall Plus. My problem seems to happen primarily when I leave the computer running without any activity, but it wouldn't be a screen saver or time-out kicking in because then the files would all stop at the same time... not the same size.

Did you change anything on the system? Did the files remain on the system? Could it be that your disk is full?

I have a friend that is having much the same issue, except that his is stopping at 24,576. It just stops downloading and starts flashing the more sources needed, no matter what you are trying to download that is bigger than that. The only thing that changed for him was that Cox upraded him to a faster service for free and they say that their upgrade isn't what is causing the problem.

Could it be a temp file limit? I'm not familiar with Kazaa. Does it cret a temp file while it downloads? Or does it go to a temp folder and may have an upper file limit? Or is the RAM filling up? Does it happen with only 1 file or with a bunch of files?

Also, did you change/upgrade the DSL modem recently?

Did I change anything on my system? I don't know. I do run XP and have it set to auto-update. (Before anyone asks, yes Servivce Pack 2 is installed, but the firewall portion is turned off.)
No, my disk is far from full. I can download an unlimited number of files from Kazaa, but most stop by 24576 or 32768kb. BTW - This problem only exists in Kazaa.
    I haven't changed modems.
If Ram were filling up, the files would all stop at the same time, not when they reach the same size.
I did see this explanation on another board, which on the face of it makes sense, but doesn't really solve my problem, only explains it.... if true.

"16 MB is the size of each "chunk" of the file that you are downloading. after you download your first "chunk" of the file, you get put back in queue to allow other users to download from the aforementioned source. to prevent this, either download a file that has more available sources, or use a different file sharing app to download what you are looking for"

What do all of you think? PS. Thanks for the support.

Listen, I don't know what you're trying to download, but kazaa is not the best place to try and download large files. It's the number one target of the **AAs, so you might get busted for one, and two, they put up so many fake files, especially large ones so that you'll get disapointed and just go and buy whatever it is you were hoping to sample. Anyways, just my two cents, I'm sure you've heard it a million times to use something else.

The stuff I download are hard to find private video clips (which are not copywrited - so I don't have to worry about music industry goons tracking me down). Other P2P Networks may have the files, though I haven't had much luck with them, and they also have spyware and adware. So far Kazaa Lite is the best I've found. I just wanted some advice on a problem I was experiencing.

I know it's partly my fault for asking what everyone thinks, but personally I don't understand what someone who doesn't like Kazaa is doing on a Kazaa bulletin board recommend people use something else. If you know for a fact that another P2P service won't have the same download "chunking" problem, then by all means please name it, but to just post saying "try something else" is not much help. Sorry.

Same problem here. K-Lite downloads like mad up to 24576 kb & stops resulting in the dreaded "More Sources Needed". Same occurs on a variety of files of the same very popular video I'm trying to get. One of them got to 32768 kb. The files are stored in my shared folder as .dat files until d/l completes. There's no doubt that there are plenty of sources available. It's a glitch somewhere. I've scoured the K-Lite option settings for a file size limit but have not found one.

My system is a healthy W2K SP4 with plenty of disk space available, cable connection.

    Anybody know why this occurs?

dont know why it occurs im afraid, but when i used kazaa, there was a handy little program called kazaamate. it gives you a rating of 1000 (supreme being) and keeps on retrying your current downloads so that they finish. if your downloads are stopping but will continue if you manually refresh them, then maybe a program like this will let you leave your pc to do its thing...
