PC freezes whilst on internet

edited January 2005 in Hardware
Hi thanks for those that managed to help with my router problem and i now have my bit torrent running

However when running bit torrent my computer, after a short space of time freezes, after 5 secs u can move the mouse again and you can see the download speeds drop off, then it'll freeze again for 5 etc etc until the connection drops off.

i presume it is the high downloading that does this.

can anyone shed any light

running xp, cable internet from a router with bit torrent ports open

thanks

Do you have a USB ethernet adapter?

no its a normal phone style ethernet adapter going into a network card, i never had any problems so ipresume its the bit torrent...any more suggestions?

Bittorrent puts a lot of stress on networking components; if there's a hardware problem, or you have poorly-written drivers, BT is probably going to uncover it. I suggest looking for newer drivers, or borrowing a network card from a friend to see if the issue persists when you substitute your card.

right....i have gone back to my router and have closed the ports that i opened. my torrents are now all yellow and are crawling, and the computer hasnt frozen so i guess open ports and or high download speed is the problem

can this be done without the computer freezing and dropping off?

Swap network cards or throttle the download limit, and limit the max upload to 3/4ths of your upload capacity.

thing is the downloads dont go all that much faster with the ports open they do go a bit quicker but i probably wont bother! thanks though
