ATI Display Drive causing XP Pro instability

I just bought a new 80GB Maxtor Hard Drive and installed it in a 3-4 year old Gateway 1400 Series system. I loaded XP Pro and as the welcome screen appeared the screen locks up.

Restarted in Safe Mode and received the following error, "Display driver for ATI RADEON VE DDR seems to be responsible for the system instability."

Not sure what to do from here ... Is the driver not compatible with XP? I thought XP came with it's on set of drivers when issues like this arise.

Reviewed information on Microsoft, was directed to two different ATI drivers 6.13.6037 and 6.13.3276. Neither were compatable. My current setting are 640 by 480, Highest 32 bit, and I have turned the hardware acceleration to None.

I don't want to put any more money in this thing than I have too. Can I disable something or turn something off to get XP Pro to run on what I have ? Windows Me had been running on it previously.

Thanx

Thanx to all who viewed my question.

My video card was the problem. Upgraded the card and I'm back up and running.

yes in that situation usually what you would do is uninstall the vid drivers first then install the proper drivers. You may want to try uninstalling the old drivers anyway and keep to latest drivers handy in case something necessary gets removed.
