Computer won't boot up!

I just installed XP SP2. After the installation I click the button to restart. It seemed to be going fine but right after the WindowsXP logo comes up and you are ready to see the desktop...it flashes this real quickly, and then restarts:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0xc000026c (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

So quickly, in fact, I had to take a bunch of pictures of the screen to find out what it said.

I tried to boot up in safe mode by pressing F8, it gave me the options:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Promt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Of which I chose Safe Mode, it says to choose operating system (WindowsXP being the only choice) so I choose it, it runs through a bunch of commands then... reboots itself. Same thing happens with the other 2 Safe Mode choices, obviously.
Of the middle 6 choices I only tried "Last Known Good Configuration"(which causes a reboot). I'm not sure what the other 5 will do, but I don't want to select anything that I don't know how to use without some advice first.
The bottom 3, of course, cause the reboot.
The F2 Menu(Setup) will come up when selected, as will the F12 Menu(Boot Menu). However, I don't know what to do with them; so I select or change nothing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

this is what I found searching at microsoft.com...

    c000021a Error
    Description
When you attempt to boot your target system, a blue screen is displayed with the message "c000021a".

The most common cause of this error is a missing device driver dependency. This can occur even if the device driver is not critical for the system to boot. For example, Redbook.sys is not required to boot the system. But if one of its dependencies, Ks.sys, is not included in the run-time image, the system displays the error code 0xc000021a.

    Resolution
Identify missing dependencies. For information, see Checking Dependencies.
If you determine that a dependency is not missing, then the error probably occurred because a file that the driver depends on is missing. Use the Microsoft® Visual Studio® Depends utility, which runs using the Depends.exe file, to view the statically loaded libraries. The libraries are located in the import section of the binary file. Search for required files that are missing from your run-time image.

probably doesn't help much, but might help you narrow down the problem..

Thank you for your input. I am needing all the angles I can get right now cause nothing like this has happend to me yet.

why not just re-format and re-install since nothing else was installed? It's probably not allowing safe mode since the original install is no good.

It was working fine before I installed SP2. Is there any way to uninstall SP2? If I had some unknown virus or spyware issues before the install would this have been a factor? I was able to follow the steps in this article, however I never got to the part where XP actually boots up again. http://www.digitalwebcast.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=8658-0

The original install was on the computer(Dell 8200 :-/ ) when I got it. It worked fine for about 2 years. I don't want to format (give up:D ) just yet. I know some people get a kick out of solving problems like this without having to go to that extreme. But thank you, that idea is definitely on the back burner (I'll cook it if I need to).

    Any input?

    Thanks

I am try the repair install off of the CD, but it keeps telling me files are missing. Every time I retry it says a different file is missing. I cleaned the disk to see if that was a problem. It gives me the option to skip these files, but I would like to know what they are first. Does anyone know if these files are critical or not:

    msvcp60.dll
    adsldpc.dll

You may have a hardware problem that hasn't revealed itself until you did this. It may not actually be SP2 causing the problem.

Read this and test your memory, just to make sure. It only takes about 20 minutes.

I'll burn it onto a disk on this computer, and try it on the other one in approx. 15, no 14 minutes. When setup is done.

    Thank you

OK, I'm running memtest now. It took awhile cause my burn program doesn't burn images without the $30 upgrade(Sonic :mean: ) . So I had to go to my shop to get a floppy, I now have several at home :D . I think I am breaking a record here. The test is 45% done, I have 0 pass and 6764 errors. I guess I might be replacing some RAM :) .

Thank you primesuspect, it's a little depressing though. I was hoping it was just a software or SVT problem.

But really, Thank YOU. I couldn't have figured it out without your help.

oh wow.. Yeah, seems like it's the ram :(

Glad I could help though. At least you're not gonna waste tons of time freaking out about software problems :)

memtest update: pass-1, errors-13572. Pass=1 does that mean something is good?

    The instrustions for errors:

First, if you have multiple sticks of ram, test each one at a time by physically pulling all RAM except for the module you wish to check. Test each good ram module in every slot to confirm if you have a faulty module or a faulty DIMM slot. Yes...DIMM slots can fail too

Does that mean that I run memtest with every different module/slot combination?

Does this memtest just keep running over and over? It's still going, and shows: Pass - 4; Errors - 47263.

Holy Crap!!! Maybe I should spend more time reading past forums and articles before I ask dumb questions, huh.

Pass= how many times it has run through the test, right?
    Errors= total for all passes?

If this is correct, I'm sorry for wasting a question. However I'm still wondering does that mean that I run memtest with every different module/slot combination?

Yeah, I know that was another stupid question now. I swaped the cards and still got 9913 Errors on the first pass. That means it is the RAM for sure, right? How does this happen? It's just an OEM computer, no upgrades, no overclocking; is it just bad hardware or is it something that was done to it.

    Thank you

cheep ram seems to have a tendency to just fail its usealy not the chips on it its the pcb and the solder on it i ALWAYS recomend kingston value ram for lowend and corsair xms for highend i havent had a kingston stick fail on me but ive had like 2 apacers ;D

RAM eventually just goes bad, just like hard drives and fans. They are the most heavily used/abused components inside of a computer.

Do I have to buy my memory from Dell? If not, how do I find out what I can buy and install with no complications?

It's been awhile. I have installed the new memory, making sure it was the right type for my computer. I have updated the BIOS. Now I have a new problem. Whenever Windows starts I keep getting an error message that says explorer.exe has to shut down. I click "send error report", it does its thing, restarts explorer, and it all happens again. It will do this over and over. I am really not sure what to do next. Does anyone have a clue what could be causing this. I am going to try repairing XP. Thanks in advance for any advice.
