Drives won't recognize CD'S

I was burning a CD-RW yesterday and Nero told me it Failed for some reason. So I clicked OK and Nero crashed back to desktop. Oh Well....I reopened it and tried again. This time my Plextor 708-a told me no media was present. I thought maybe it trashed the disc so I took it to another machine and erased it. Put it back in the Plextor , wont read it. So I stuck an audio cd a program disc and a few others in there , nothing. I tried a DVD, it sees it just fine. I thought it was the Plextor until this morning when I discovered that the other optical drive an NEC DVD ROM won't read a CD either. DVD's yes CD's no. I restarted XP a couple times nothing, I checked "Services" and found that the imapi service was disabled I set it to automatic. No change.

I am almost certain this is not a hardware problem. Both drives are on different IDE channels, both worked yesterday, neither work today( following a software crash ). Both read DVD's fine, Neither will even acknowledge that a CD is in the tray. The plextor has a ready light. ( stays light when a disc is present ) no light with a cd.

Any ideas ?

it sure has me confused

Thanks in advance for your help

Scott

Maybe your atapi.sys (I think that's the one for CDs) file is faulty. Try to boot with a CD (has its own drivers). If you can access your CDs then you need to replace those faulty CD device drivers.
