My Enter key on my numpad is doing strange things

edited January 2005 in Hardware
well, i just noticed today that whenever i press the enter key on my numpad, my computer beeps and brings up the menu it would bring up if i pressed my right mouse button.

I went into the "keyboard" setting on my control panel and went into the little box where you can test your keys. I pressed the numpad enter again, and again it beeped and the number 75 came up in the box.

This is really strange and has never happened before. If i press the enter key on my numpad to much, it puts my computer into stand-by mode.

Can someone help me please?

Bad keyboard? Try swapping it if you have another one.

Keyboard just needs a cleaning most likely. Although if it's a cheap keyboard and you have to take it apart to clean it, don't expect to get it back together very easily.

You can either clean it out, or toss it. I've never had that happen with my keyboard and I've had it for over 9 years now. Guess they just don't make 'em like they used to anymore. At work we have these one yr. old HPs and one of the kids dropped the keyboard on the ground, it wasn't far, it just basically slid off the keyboard tray, and now the numeric keypad enter key is very flaky. Sometimes if you press it, it stays pressed down and you have to bang it from the other side to make it pop out. Sometimes you don't even touch it and after a reboot the computer goes into a beeping fit, but stops as soon as you make the enter key pop out.

I'd say in your case, just go out and get a cheap $5 keyboard, unless of course you spent a lot on this one, then try cleaning it out. If that doesn't fix it, sorry.

If it's a wireless Logitech, I've had key problems before. The solution was to remove the batteries and just press keys for about 2 minutes till all of the residual stored power was exhausted in the keyboard and therefore any mis-assigned keys went back to default settings. Put the batteries back in and re-sync with the receiver and Voila! It worked again. That fix is actually on Logitech's web site faq.

If it's a standard wired keyboard, just ignore my longwinded response!!

i fixed it guys, i opened it up and noticed ALOT of dirt under it. I cleaned it and it started to work again until my CTRL key just tottally stopped working. Its alright though, i just went out and bought another keyboard anyway.

    Thanks for everyones suggestions! :)
