Altnet Claims Patent On P2P Core Technology

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
Altnet claims to have a patent on P2P technology. Specifically, the patent deals with identifying files using "hashing," which helps identify a file more quickly.
On the basis of their patent the company filed a lawsuit in December against the RIAA and companies the organization used to track down and stop illegal P2P transfers. Altnet claimed that the RIAA and the associated companies were using the "hashing" technology in their P2P investigations.

Altnet has now turned their eye on other P2P services as part of their patent enforcement efforts. Letters were sent to Lime Wire, BearShare and Mashboxx informing the companies that they were using patented technology and that they should discuss licensing opportunities with Altnet. Sharman Network’s Kazaa has already signed a licensing agreement with Altnet covering the patent.
