Hard Drive Replacement?

edited January 2005 in Hardware
Hi,
The hard drive on my sony sub-notebook (PCG-U3(Japanese Model)) is dead! and what I need to know is this:

If I get a replacement HDD and swap them over, Will the system recognise it or does it have to be installed with disks etc...? The HDD in it now a Toshiba MK2003GAH (20GB) but I cant find one the same but i've found another one, Toshiba MK4004GAH (40GB) Would the extra space be a problem or would it be OK?

Any Help/Info Would be Gratefully Recieved

Many Thanks
Trev

just had a look at Toshiba site and according to the specs of both drives the only differences are the disk space and the read/write head technology

    the mk2003gah has a Magneto-Resistive Head
and the mk4004gah has a Dual Stripe MR Head

if that makes any difference or not i dont know

I would think the 40 gig drive should work just fine. You will just have to physically mount it into the drive cage or whatever else your notebook uses to connect it.
