Computer Hijacked, Everything tried... PLEASE HELP

Ok, I've tried the removal guide on this website, and I've tried about 3 other guides. I've tried EVERY tool that has been suggested... I'm usually very computer savvy but this thing has crippled me. I think my roommate got it from a website he was looking at... not sure but whatever it is... IT WILL NOT GO AWAY.

My Biggest problem... McAfee SecurityCenter is also hijacked as it seems to use IE for its main interface. Whatever it uses, a search page (HomeSearch or CoolWeb... not sure which) pops up and expands itself to the window of mcafee and I can't do anything.

And I don't know if this is related or not, but since this has happened... I cannot print ANYTHING. Printer just spits out blank pages (Printer will print self tests... but thats it). I've removed all drivers and reinstalled the newest... same deal. Not sure if this is related or not.

As far as the processes that are suppose to appear in services.msc. I couldn't find any that were suppose to be there, in safe mode and normal. I also used the vbscript and did not notice any funky/weird characters next to any of the processes. I've done all the hard boot things and followed everything to the T. The programs remove everything, but they constantly come back... I have other logs of AboutBuster and FxAgentB as well as an Active.txt from the get_active_services.

    You have a nasty CWS infection.

    Are you using XP Home or Pro? Also go into my computer and right click on the C: drive and tell me if the filesystem is NTFS or FAT32?

    Next please download and install the program Registry Lite from here:

    http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

    Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu.

    Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

    And press enter. You will now be presented with new information in the bottom right and left sections and on the right section, the name AppInit_DLLs should be highlighted. Double-click on the AppInit_DLLs entry and copy and paste the text found in the value field in your next reply to this post.

    I'm running Windows XP Pro and all drives are NTFS. I currently have system restore off as I didn't bother to reinstate it after I went through the guide to try to get rid of this stuff.


    As for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

    The value is empty; type is REG_SZ and Size is 1.

    When it has downlaoded, run the program and click on the Run Locate.com button. When that has completed, click on the compare button. When that completed click on the make log button. Then post the contents of that log as a reply to this post.

    Also, if it helps... when I clear everything out and it seems like its gone... When I click on the search button in IE, it brings up a hijacked page as well, and then the sp.dll recreates itself. Same thing when I open McAfee SecurityCenter... dunno if that helps =\ Seems like no one knows how to fix this =\

    Oh, we can fix this. We just needed to be sure there wasn't a hidden dll file causing the trouble. And it doesn't appear that there is.

    Reboot your computer into Safe Mode



    Run CWShredder while in Safe Mode, making sure to click "Fix".

    Run a full scan with Adaware while in Safe Mode.



    Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\lmhl.dll



    Delete temp files

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

    Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

    Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin



    Reboot back to normal mode and post a new hijackthis log.

    WOOHOO It worked... All gone and everything back to normal.

    Except for the printing part... don't suppose anyone can help me out there? =\ HP.com tried charging me 30 bux for getting help...

    Thanks so much for helping me Buckeye, I had suspicions about that lmhl.dll for a while, but I didn't see the 32 variation that everyone said to look for.

    Sometimes this infection can come back if you don't get all of the pieces. Please post a new hijackthis log so I can make sure that you're clean.

    You're looking good!

    Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
    1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

    2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

    4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

    6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

    7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

    8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

    9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

    10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
    Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
