Reboot your computer into Safe Mode


Run CWShredder, making sure to click "Fix".


Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Viewpoint Manager



Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist):

Delete temp files

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Open the Prefetch folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Prefetch folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin



Reboot back to normal mode.

Please run these two online scans.
Make sure they are set to clean automatically:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
   1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
   2. Click once on the Security tab
   3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
   4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
         
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
         
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

I deleted that last log file and diabled system restore in order to delete all previous restore points. I haven't had any problems. And I will defineitly take note of your recomendations to prevent this from happening again in the future. I had been doing most of what you mentioned, but I didn't have SpywareBlaster. These will make a difference. I also am running a program to protect my homepage (nospy.org).

I did notice one last thing that concerned me. In my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry - Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main, the Start Page name has about:blank in the value field. Should I change this to something else? Is this related to my problem? Please advise.

It looks like you've got a hidden dll file that's causing us trouble. Now we have to find it.



Are you using XP Home or Pro? Also go into my computer and right click on the C: drive and tell me if the filesystem is NTFS or FAT32?

Next please download and install the program Registry Lite from here:

http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu.

Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

And press enter. You will now be presented with new information in the bottom right and left sections and on the right section, the name AppInit_DLLs should be highlighted. Double-click on the AppInit_DLLs entry and copy and paste the text found in the value field in your next reply to this post.

Now that we know where the trouble is coming from we can fix you up. Please follow these steps.

Step 1:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Create new folder on your hard drive called c:\regbackup.


Step 2:

Download the file Hiving.bat from here:

Once the file is download, extract it to your desktop and disconnect from the Internet.


Now double-click on the extracted Hiving.bat found on your desktop. If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning. Please allow the entire script to run.

When it has completed. Immediately reboot your computer. Once your computer has been rebooted, we will be able to see the file that keeps infecting you.


Step 3:

Once the computer has restarted, find this file:

c:\windows\system32\wdmd.dll

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. I need you to right click on the file and go into its properties. Then click on the Security tab and click on the Advanced button. Make sure under the Permissions tab that your the Everyone or Users group has Full Control. If they don't, click once on that group to select them and click on the Edit button. Then put a checkmark in the Full Control box. Next click on the Owner tab and click once on your name. Then press the Apply button to take ownership. Then keep pressing OK to get out of the properties page. Now delete the file.


Step 4:

Reboot into normal mode and download and run CWShredder.

When the program is loaded click on the "Check for Update" button, and if it finds an new version it will download it. You should then double click on cwshredder.exe again and click on the "FIX" button (not the "Scan only" button) and let it scan your computer.


Step 5:
Next please download the latest version of Ad-Aware from the following location:

Make sure you update the program before you scan with it. A tutorial on using ad-aware can be found below:

When that is completed post a new hijackthis log.

I downloaded the Hiving.bat file and ran it as you mentioned. I made sure to show all hidden files. However, when I re-booted the machine after running Hiving.bat and searched for wdmd.dll, NOTHING WAS FOUND.

I followed your instructions precisely. When I ran the registrar lite program again, I am getting the same readout as before:

Do you have any idea why I cannot find this pesky file?

Copy and paste this line into the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it.

c:\windows\system32\wdmd.dll

Go ahead and reboot when Killbox asks you to.



Now let's take another look for hidden files.

• Download DLLCompare.
• Double-click on DllCompare.exe to run the program.
• Click "Run Locate.com" and it will scan your system for files.
• Once the scan has finished click "Compare" to compare your files to valid Windows files.
• Once it has finished comparing click "Make a Log of what was found".
• Click "Yes" at the View Log file? prompt to view the log.
• Copy and paste the entire log into this topic.
• If you accidentally close out of the log it is also saved as log.txt to where you saved DllCompare.exe.
• Click "Exit" to exit DLLCompare.

Buckeye,

I was finally able to kill that file. Initially Killbox could not delete the file due to file access under the standard deletion method. I then clicked on the delete at reboot radio button and I think the file was deleted. I re-ran killbox to find that file and I got a message saying that the file did not exist. I think that is good news.

I have posted the first DLLCOMPARE LOG and then the second log (after I deleted the file).

One last thing, when I run a regedit and look into the registry keys:

and look for the the Applnit_DLLs name, I see c:\windows\system32\wdmd.dll in the data field. What should I do from here?

One last thing - Although that file path shows up in the data field of the registry, when I have Killbox look for this file, it indicates that the file does not exist.

Should I simply change the file name in that data field of the AppInit_Dlls name?

Here is the result of my latest log after deleting the latest HJT fix. BTW, I was only able delete the hmgan.dll file. I could not find the wdmd.dll file. It also no longer appears in the value file of the registar lite program. Please let me know what the next steps are.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
   1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
   2. Click once on the Security tab
   3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
   4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
         
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
         
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
         
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
         
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
         
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
   5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
   
   
3. Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

4. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
   
   
5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
   
   
7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
