Hope someone can help me out with this one. I cannot find any answers on the net, except from a site that wants 10.00 a month to join.

When I try to run System Restore from the Control Panel I get the following error message:

RUNDLL
An exception occurred while trying to run "C:\Windows\System32\Shell32.dll,
Control_RUNDLL "C:\Windows\System32\SYSDM.CPL",System"

When I right click on My Computer-Properties-System Restore, I get this error:

Run a DLL as an App
Run a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Details:
APPNAM:rstrui.exe AppVer 5.1.2600.2180 ModName srrstr.dll

ModVer:5.1.2600.2180 Offset 000098b2

DrWatson Postmortem Debugger then appears stating it has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I have run Chkdsk and also ran SFC \scannow /F/V/R/X and I still have the same problem.

I appreciate any replies, thank-you,

Kevin

Reboot in Safe Mode and give it a shot.

You can download Shell32.dll here. Copy it to your C:\Windows\System32 folder.

Have you scanned for viruses with the latest definitions? It could have been hijacked by an infection. I'd run a Hard Drive test, too. A failing drive could also cause the problem.

    Good Luck! :)

The Shell32.DLL that I have is 8188kb, it resides in System32, DLLCache and also in Windows Servicepackfiles\i386. It is file version 6.0.2900.2180, created 01/14/2004 at 3:20PM.

I am running service pack 2. The site that I downloaded the shell32.dll in the above post was only 1.3 MB. I did not try to use it.

I checked my wifes PC which is also running Service Pack 2 and the Shell32.dll files were the same size and version as on mine.

I had scanned for viruses earlier when I tried everything I could think of and I did have a Java Bytever.A in my temp folder, now deleted. I hope it is not my drive as it is only a couple of months old, but I will test it.

Thanks so far for the replies,

    Kevin

You might find that the DLL (As a dynamic link library) grows as it caches amasses information about your system.. It is dynamic, afterall. It can harbor changed settings, configurations, etcetera.

Kevin - what's your reason for doing a system restore? Is something going wrong that you want to fix? You might try downloading and re-installing Service Pack 2. It overwrites a lot of the kernel files and it might fix your issue.

    GHoosdum,Thrax,profdlp and topherice,

The reason I tried to run System Restore in the first place was because of a program I installed yesterday(slap me with a spoon!!). It seemed to create some issues. It was called Disk Washer. I have uninstalled it. I downloaded SP2 Networking version and ran it, but it did not seem to install. I figured that when it was doing it's inventory, it might have realized that it was already there. I tried to uninstall SP2 using Add/Remove but it did not work either. It could not find the uninstaller, and I could not find it either. At this point, I decided oh well, I have several back ups dating back to December 7th last year. Although this was a last resort, as I like to see if I can fix things manually,(Don't learn nuttin' the easy way). Well, I ran all three back ups dating back to the 7th and lo and behold, the problem was there back then. Okay, It looks like I might have to do a clean install, though I don't really want to. I will wait a couple of days to see if any other replies can help. Funny though, the site that I mentioned that had a fix had just about the same error as the problem I have..... sign up for the solution....only $9.99/Month.

    The Truth is Out There......

I hope I can find it....

    Thanks for all your suggestions...

If you're running Windows XP Pro, not home, you can run a repair install. Boot from your CD and select do a repair installation. Not the first time it asks you though, do it the second time that you get a chance. This will install Windows XP, but it will keep all your apps and settings that you currently have. You might have to re-install a couple things that require SP1 or 2 to be installed, but once you finish with the repair install, you'll have to go to windows update and re-install all the patches and fixes, SP2 included. That "should" fix any problems you're having.

    kanezfan,
Thanks for the info, I had already done a repair install this afternoon before I saw your post. It did work, system restore is functioning again. I then backed up my C partition: with the pre SP2, then I updated to SP2. Now I will back up again with SP2.

Thanks to all of you for the help...
