Resetting my default media player?

I've got XP on my Dell computer. I've always used Windows Media Player with a Classic skin for all my media playing purposes. The other day I had downloaded a file from Kazaa that required the Real player, which I also have.
But now, my computer always opens files with Real Player instead of WMP. I went into the system and clicked the radio button to make WMP the default again, but it doesn't stay. Every time I turn the computer on and try to play a file, it wants to use Real. I have to click on "Open with..." and select WMP to see it my way.
Needless to say, it got old really fast.
I even tried a System Restore, but that didn't help it.
So how can I make WMP my default again? So that it STAYS the default?

Then, set the option in WMP to make itself the default for avi, mpeg, etc.
Right click on the file you want WMP to open and see if it gives you the option to open it w/ WMP.
(I'd tell you where to go to change the settings but I don't have RP on here, and the WMP I have on this computer is different than the version in XP.)
They also offer Quicktime Alternative.
