Just Completed Full Re-Install but cant d/l SP2 or open Control Pannel???...

Hey, guy. Long story short. I have a virus, couldn't fix, backed up everything, reinstalled it. Everything works really good now but I noticed the other day, I tried to get into my C/P and it just instantly sent me an error report???? So I checked my history on Microsoft web-site and noticed that Service Pack 2 failed to install??? But when I check for updates, It wont list SP2 as something I need, nor can I find it to try and d/l it???
1. Does anyone know why I cant get in my c/p or how to fix that?
2. Does anyone know why SP2 didnt install and where I can find it to d/l it? (it will not show available for my system on microsoft site).
3. Are the 2 above problems related?

Thanks in advance.

Jay

    1. What do you mean you "can't get in your control panel"? What exactly is it doing?
    2. Because you already have it? Are you SURE it's not installed?
    3. Assuming the problem isn't that the install itself isn't f'ed up beyond belief, no.

What virus did you have before you reinstalled? If it was a true virus (and not spyware/malware) then simply reinstalling Windows will not get rid of it.

well, the virus cased the comp to run extremely slow and it couldnt be removed from the registry. it was called ccate.exe rerun. a friend of mine did the full reinstall b/c after he removed the virus, we couldnt get my printer or video card software to reinstall. (the virus was in the printer folder). anyway everything works perfect now, if not better than it did b/f. when i click on c/p, it sits there for a sec, the that familiar window pops up that says "there was a problem opening c/p and it must shut down...send error report to m/s? or click here not to send report".

anyway, i was able to look in "add/remove" files and i scrolled down to sp2 and to the far right where is says the size of the program, there was nothing at all...unlike all the other programs. then i logged onto m/s updates and did a history install search and saw when i did the updates, in blue is said "failed" next to sp2.
    Thanks.

When you say full re-install, did yuo format the hard drive? Did you totally wipe out everything and start from scratch? If you didn't format the hard drive, then the virus might still be screwing with you.

Weather the virus has been removed or not, it sounds like another reinstall is in order. How do you know the ccate.exe file was the cause? Was it pegged by a virus scanner?

Yes, full reinstall of XP. h/d was wiped clean. the ccat.exe rerun was not recognized by many techs and would not delete and took ALL my cpu usage. Im convienced its all gone. something has happened since the reinstall last wk, b/c at first, i could get into the c/p. but once i did the windows update, it wont let me in there now.

Daaaaaaaaaaamn! Can I not get a copy of Sp2 and reinstall it? or maybe a back door to the c/p so i can reinstall it over? or maybe do a sys restore to a earlier date?

maybe try Start>Run>C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe an see if you can roll it back althought i doubt it since you jsut now reinstalled. i can put reg cleaner up here so you can download it an try to take away the SP2 registry keys if you want. not sure that will work with sp2 but it does for games

it will display a list from your redistry an you have the option to remove what you want. be carefull with doin that tho cause its easy to remove the wrong thing but you can always restore backups.
just scan your computer with it an get rid of anything service pack 2 related
