Wi-Fi Surpasses Ethernet For Home Networking

edited January 2005 in Science & Tech
A new report released Wednesday suggests that the number of households using Wi-Fi wireless technology for home networking outpaced the number using Ethernet. More than half of the 17 million networked homes in the US already use Wi-Fi, market research firm Parks Associates said.
This study, which surveyed consumers in Europe and North America on technology adoption and use, found 52 percent of US households with a home network use Wi-Fi and 50 percent use Ethernet. By comparison, only 32 percent of Canadian households with a home network use Wi-Fi, 43 percent use Ethernet, and 26 percent were unsure which technology they were using.

According to Kurt Scherf, principal analysts at Parks Associates, many users currently use heterogeneous networks consisting of Ethernet and Wi-Fi, because of flexibility and reliability reasons." Consumers really latch onto the convenience that Wi-Fi provides in terms of being able to locate PCs in multiple locations in the home. However, Wi-Fi is still coming of age, and we know that there are still issues related to household coverage," he said.
