Home Search/CWS
I see I'm not the only person having trouble with Search Assistant. I've been using a combination of HSremove, HJT and Ad-Aware. This thing installs itself (I can actually unistall it from the Win Add/Remover programs list). I can identify and remove all the appropriate files, DLL's, entries, etc, but there's obviously a primary file on my system somewhere that keeps re-installing. The strange thing is that it doesn't seem to have any type of pattern to the re-install. I've had it install on boot-up, but I've booted up with no occurence too. I've had it install itself at different times of the day while my PC is just on. I've been running Browser Hijack Blaster in the background, so it warns me when my home page is changed and when the BHO is added.
Here's what I've got so far (running XP Pro):
-There's a common DLL file that keeps appearing - "sp.dll". This DLL shows up in the user temp file- Documents and Settings>User>Local Settings>Temp.
-There's a secondary DLL file that is associated with HS, but this secondary DLL gets renamed. So far I've had - icd.dll, bec.dll, inlalj.dll, cgh.dll, and nncb.dll. If I don't delete the secondary DLL, the name stays. The secondary DLL is in the System 32 directory.
-I have no problem locating and destroying all the appropriate files and entries, I just can't keep it from coming back.
Is there a way to have Win log application installs? Since I can uninstall this from the Win install utility, if I could track what happens when it installs, I might be able to find the primary file that keeps recreating everything.
Thoughts?
Gary
