Does anyone in here know how to bypass the microsoft word file password prompt? I forgot the password used to create these files 6 years ago. Thanks.

Try using "takeown" to (as you probably guessed) take ownership of a file. :)

Sorry, bypassing the password can't be done. The password is encrypted into the Word file, you cannot bypass it.

There are "brute force" password cracking tools out there, they work from a dictionary to try pretty much every word possible to unlock the file. The problem with that is if you do not use a known english word in the dictionary, or a combination of words and letters and characters, then it cannot work. And, brute force crackers take lots of time to work, it could run for days.

But, what you could do try is a password recovery tool (some of those are also brute force crackers as well.) There are apps that will decode the password and tell you what it is. I have yet to see a free one, so you will spend a bit of money to do that...and you are taking your chances sending money to someone for a hacking tool.... Just google "crack ms word password" or "recover ms word password" and find one that you want to take your chances on.

Having said that, I just tested this one:

    http://lastbit.com/word/default.asp

The demo version will recover passwords up to 3 chars long. It worked to find my 3 character password on a file in about 3 seconds! If the file is important to you, I recommend buying this one, it seems to be legit.
