Error with External hard drives

edited January 2005 in Hardware
I'm giving a presentation this evening and had my video and powerpoint on two external hard drives, one 120 gig, one 160 gig. I unplugged the drives and plugged them into my lap top and my lap top was unable to recgonize the data. It saw the drives but said they needed reformating. I then plugged them back into my editing station and it said the same thing. I have all the data backed up but about 60 gigs that I must have. Is there anything I can do and why did this do this to me? Both machines are Windows XP, one media edition, on home. I have also now tried it on an XP pro and the same thing happens with that.

If you can help, I really appreciate it.
