The Official Short-Media Half Life 2: DM server

edited February 2005 in Gaming
After talking it over with Primesuspect, I am considering putting together a donation fund for an official HL2DM server for Short-Media. The cost of running the server will be $40 a month (to pay for bandwidth) and the cost of whatever hardware we use to put the machine together.

Right now I'm not even sure if there will be enough people interested for this project to be worthwhile, but here's a list of what we're going to need to get this thing off the ground:
  • 1U Rack mount case
  • 1.5 GHz (or more) CPU + compatible mobo (Will need either onboard video and/or LAN)
  • 256MB (or 512MB might work better, I'll have to double check) of ram which will be compatible with the said mobo.
  • Heatsink short enough to fit in a 1U rack mount case
  • 1U PSU

I should be able to handle a HDD myself, but I'll have to check my spare parts pile at home. Parts donations would be the best way to do this (as well as money unless someone actually has a 1U case they can part with).

So what do you people think? Are there enough people here interested in starting this?

I'll provide the SRCDS server software!

Oh, and I'll provide the server OS too :D

Will it fold? I can donate a Soyo K7VME motherboard if so.

it should'nt fold imho. HL2/CSS server require a decent spec as it does alot of server side processing for the advanced physics models of the HL2 engine. Id like to see SM CSS server personally. Ive played DM 2x but I play CSS every day for hours... yes im sad... :D

Folding on servers is a BAD idea. Besides, HL2 servers are rather resource hogging, and it'll need all the resources it can get.

BTW, I dont know ANYTHING about CSS, nor do I like it. I also don't think you could/should run both servers at once on the same machine.

    One consideration:

Any donated parts really should be 1U rackmount optimized. "server" boards instead of normal desktop ATX boards, server PSU, passive heatsinks optimized for windtunnel-type fans instead of low profile active heatsinks, etc.

Wouldn't just about any normal sized ATX spec mobo board fit an a 1U case? That's what I've come to believe.

EDIT: Ghoosdum, if you'd like to donate that board, I MAY be able to get ahold of a CPU for it right away. Just lemme know.

If it really is OK in a 1U case, I'll donate it.

    I've got a few questions:
    A) Doesn't folding use just spare CPU cycles and not affect the performance of any other app?
    B) Would the server really see activity 24 hrs per day that would cause it to have 0 spare cycles for folding?

Or is it a heat issue?

    Folding@Home uses memory!

    Folding@Home uses memory!

nein... folding uses cpu cycles. 100% of them.

I agree, folding on a server is a bad idea.

CSS is the ownage but only if you have a few dedicated players to help manage things and @kick @ban cheaters.

Folding actually only uses 100% of your CPU cylces minus any CPU cycles being used by anything else. I have never ever experienced a performance hit from Folding on any PC I've ever folded on. Honestly, I don't like the idea of any of those CPU cycles going to waste on any machine (especially a server which is going to run 24/7 anyway!)

All I'm saying is - it's going to be tough to convince me that Folding is a bad idea on any machine if you're talking about CPU usage alone. It's just a biased or ignorant opinion to think that Folding will give any other application a performance hit - it is the lowest priority process possible.

the only thing negative i can think of for folding would be memmory usage. If u get a large WU, it might take up over 100MB of ram.

but other than that, no performance hit at all.

Cyrix, I'm still waiting to find out if enough people are intrested, and if so, I'll need to figure out a way to get the $40/month paid for.

Bone: What kind of connection will this server be on?
