PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse No Longer Work in Win2k

edited March 2005 in Hardware
Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm fixing this machine that goes in a small office. It's a semi old Compaq; it refused to boot, which I solved by replacing the psu. After that it would blue screen while trying to start Windows 2000, with a STOP error, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, and a mention of L8042pr2.sys. It would blue screen even when booting into safe mode. In the recovery console, I disabled L8042pr2 and the system booted fine, just without a mouse. A USB mouse still worked fine, so I used that to try to uninstall the Logitech mouse in the Device Manager. It asked me to reboot and I did. I plugged in a PS/2 mouse and started it back up. In Windows, the mouse refused to work; there isn't even a pointer on the screen. It popped up a message about having finished installing a new device and forced me to restart, which I did. Now I'm back at the Win2k logon screen, and neither the PS/2 keyboard nor mouse work, not even in any of the safe modes. The keyboard works fine in the BIOS and in the Win2k CD, just not in Windows. Is this an obsure hardware problem or perhaps a virus? During the brief amount of time I was in Windows, I spotted Gator installed, among other fun things. How should I fix this?

If you can, I'd just reinstall Windows. It appears to be broken and filled with clutter, and unless you have a USB keyboard to go with that mouse you really don't have any way of doing anything in Windows.

Try booting up in Safe Mode. If both devices work there you'll at least know it's not a hardware problem. If that helps, I would uninstall every reference to a mouse, keyboard, and PS2 ports, then let Windows (hopefully) detect them again.

If that fails, you might give this a shot:
...After that it would blue screen while trying to start Windows 2000, with a STOP error, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, and a mention of L8042pr2.sys...
That file refers to a Logitech PS2 mouse filter. You might try downloading and replacing the file.

    Good Luck! :)

EDIT: Sorry, cosmos - I was too slow posting my reply. Nice find - hope it helps you, HG. :mullet:

I had a computer in the office this past week with about the same problem. A new install of Windows fixed it though.
