VIA Technologies Formally Unveils New Intel Pentium 4 Chipsets
Chipset designer VIA Technologies formally announced its new lineup of chipsets supporting the latest Intel Pentium 4 processors, PCI Express interconnection technology as well as DDR2 memory. While the chips from the Taiwanese designer come late, they carry feature-set not presently offered by companies like Intel Corp.
Source: X-Bit LabsVIA’s new chipsets – PT880 Pro, PT894 and PT894 Pro – target different groups of users providing flexible set of capabilities, such as support for both PCI Express x16 and AGP 8x slots for graphics cards, simultaneous support for dual-channel DDR and DDR2 memory at 400MHz and 667MHz respectively, as well as dual PCI Express x16 slots for graphics cards for those who demand extreme performance using a Multi-GPU technology. VIA claims all of its new products will enable cost-effective mainboards.
The new VIA PT-series chipset North Bridges – the chips that contain memory and graphics bus controllers – can be combined with VIA VT8237 South Bridge or the forthcoming VIA VT8251 South Bridge – input/output controllers – that offer affordability and feature-set.
