Hitachi Ships 60 GByte 1.8-Inch Harddrive
Hitachi announced it is shipping a 60 GByte version of 1.8-inch C4K harddrive. The drive precedes an 80 GByte model from competitor Toshiba, which will become available in April.
Source: Tom's Hardware GuideThe new Hitachi 1.8-inch Travelstar C4K60 builds on the previous 20, 30, and 40 GByte versions and again aims at the digital and mobile consumer. With 60 GByte space and a storage density of 99.8 Gbit per square inch, the drive will carry up to 15,000 songs, 25,000 five-megapixel pictures or 240 hours of MPEG-4 video.
The drive's shock protection is rated 500 Gs operating and 1200 Gs non-operating. This would allow the drive safely sustain a three-foot drop onto a "modestly-padded floor", the manufacturer said.
Optimized for audio applications, the C4K60 series also includes noise-reduction technology, which results in sound emission at idle and seek operations that are "virtually undetectable" by the human ear, according to Hitachi.
