Half-Life 2 Sells 1.7 Million Units Through Retail

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
Valve's critically acclaimed first-person shooter Half-Life 2 has clocked up almost 1.7 million retail sales since its launch less than two months ago, according to the latest information from publisher Vivendi Universal Games.
The game doesn't appear to have seen its fortunes dented by the long series of delays which afflicted its development, which saw the release date being pushed back by more than a year in a number of highly publicised slips.

VU Games notes that outside of the United States, sales of the game have been particularly strong in European territories such as Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Scandinavia.

Presumably based on the long-term success of the original Half-Life - which remained a strong performer at retail several years after its original release - VUG is hoping that the title will continue to sell well in the coming months, and describes it as "set to become one of the biggest hits of 2005".

It could also be attributed to the fact that it's the best video game of all time.

agreed. Single player game rocks, CSS rocks, HL2 DM rocks, add to it that it scales pretty good to run on lower end systems, which DOOM3 did not, and you got a winning combination. Now valve needs to work on the multiplayer cheat issues. In recent weeks there has been a huge rise in people using speed and wall hacks in CSS, something I believe valve promised to control, but at this point, they have done nothing.

Come on valve kill the cheaters and keep this wonderful game pure.

Not forgetting the mod community which will keep the game fresh probably till HL3 rolls around :)

Gobbles they are still working on the anti cheat issue, I would suggest a server that you canr egular on with nice people and a good number of admins, finding that special server is hard but once you have found it your set for life.

And for all you HL2DM junkies there should be a big update to HL2DM in Febuary(I'm gonna guess late Feb) which should contain atleast 3 new maps and the 2 new weapons, the stun stick and the slam, which is a trip mine sort of thing.

Halo 2 is at like 6.4 million, which is disgusting.

Consoles always sell waaay more then PC games, but games like halo 2 usually have a sudden jolt of sales then they calm down into practically nothingness, games like half life 2 keep on selling.
