Printer problems

edited February 2005 in Hardware
OK, this is really getting on my nerves.

Thursday, my printer was fine. Today, it's not working

It's a Canon BJC 2110, connected via USB.

Here's what happened from Fri - Today

SAT: Disconnected PC to take to a LAN party
SUN: Brought back PC, reseated mobo, reconnected
SUN: When I booted the PC, the CMOS had to go back to default settings (don't know why, it just failed to boot). Since I didn't change much originally (just time, date, and boot order), I fixed those and went to Windows.
SUN nt: Installed Magic Online.

TODAY: I went to print out a resume and nothing happens. The printer itself is fine AFAI can tell (power works, it's in the home position, cables are all snug and in correct positions). I looked through CMOS to see if I could change any settings for a USB printer, but I didn't see anything to be aware of. I deleted the printer under the PRINTER AND FAXES, unhooked it (via hotswapping), rehooked it, WinXP found it and installed the drivers, and it STILL doesn't work.

What appears to be happening is that the data gets stuck in transmission. For example, when I click PRINT, the data gets sent, but then it just freezes (so about half of the file gets sent). It's only a resume, very small file and was working fine Thursday.

I can't uninstall the drivers AFAIK. No option for it that I can see under WinXP (not SP1 or SP2 BTW). The latest drivers are already on the WinXP CD (the last one was made in 2001).

What could be wrong? This is aggravating because it seems to be happening to another printer in our house.

There is a driver on the Canon USA website for the BJC2100 family of printers that's about 2.2 MB for WinXP(VEr 1.50 I think). I suggest you reload the driver for the printer and not rely on XP's driver.

Well, I tried it and it's still not working.

I tested the printer on another computer and it's not working there either (and this other computer was just reformatted and still clean and not full of stuff). So I've narrowed things down to the printer being the source of the problem. I think that the printer is not sending information back to the PC (which is why the Windows tells me that there's a Document Failed to Print error).

Hmmm..... Did you swithc any cables around??? Some printers do not like being hooked to USB 2.0 enabled ports, and if the printer cable from your other printer which did not work got switched to this one, problem might be a cable and not the printers (either printer, might just be cable).

Yeah, I had a different USB cable on the other computer (cuz I was too lazy to remove the one in this one) and it didn't do anything either. Someone said I may have to clean the contacts in the printer, but I don't know where in this thing they'd be.

I'm really considering tossing it, but I just blew about 30 bucks on new ink (the printer itself was 29.99)

Have you considered using your parallel port instead of USB for printing? In the bios, have your parallel mode set as SPP or EPP.

My Canon i560 doesn't like the parallel mode as EPP+ECP. That caused all lot of printing problems :banghead:.
