CD/DVD drives not being recognized.

edited February 2005 in Hardware
Hey all. I had great luck with these forums over in the Spyware/Virus section, so I thought I'd try to seek some help in this section as well. My computer seems to be having trouble recognizing the CD and DVD drives. When I click on My Computer there is are no longer icons for the D and E drives. I don't have a floppy drive, so the only drive that shows up in 'My Computer' is my C drive. I also can't get CDs or DVDs that usually automatically play as soon as they're inserted to play. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice on how I can fix this. Thank you.

sounds like a loose cable to me. either ide or molex power connector for one or both of your optical drives. i would take the side panel off of your case and see if any of the cables coming out of the back of your cd/dvd drives are loose. also check to see that the other end of those cables are plugged firmly into the motherboard.

also, you can try using a different molex(4-port power) connector on one or both of the drives. there should be a few spare ones floating around inside your case. sometimes just unplugging and re-plugging does the trick.

p.s. i can post pics if you have any questions.

I would say a loose cable would be your first check. If that doesn't work, and the cables are tight, if you are connected with an IDE cable, just make sure it is in the right spot. If you are running your HDD's on RAID than obviously you will have 2 open 40 pin connectors which will leave room for error. Just make sure your cables are in the right spot. Check your Motherboard layout for which goes where.

If all else fails you may need to get a new cable, IDE cables are pretty inexpensive.

    Good luck,
