sil3112 bios upgrade -> boot hang

edited June 2006 in Science & Tech
Hi All,

I flashed my pci sil3112 card up to the newest bios last night to see if I'd get any new options (bad move in retrospect, the only thing on it is a cdrw and it worked fine before).

My hard drives are attached to an adaptec 29160 scsi card, along with a dvd rom drive. The only device attached to the sil3112 card is a plextor cdrw with a sil3611 ide to sata converter board. It doesn't seem to matter whether the sata card or scsi card has a lower IRQ (I've set both by hand in the bios). I'm running an abit NF7 r2.0 with the latest bios (I flashed it to see if that would change things at all, and nada).

I can boot right up until the OS would load then the machine hangs, if I unplug the cdrw from the sata card (ie: no devices attached to the sata card) then I can boot into windows normally and hotplug the cdrw.

Any Ideas?

Well if all your running is the Plextor I would recommend just flashing back to the previous bios.

This is a add in card correct?

yeah, this is an add-in card. the only problem with flashing back the bios is that I don't have a copy of the old one, afaik you can't backup the bios with the tools they give you, or if you can I didn't know you could.

    Hello tek010101,

I have the same problem as yours?
Did you find any solution in the meantime?

    Thank you,

Today I tried to update the BIOS on my PCI SIL3112 SATA controller card as per instructions from the vendor. I created and booted from a floppy and did as written by them: "A:\> updflash r4276.bin sil3112"

The result was that my system booted but windows never did! Nada.

Checking with the DOS boot version of partition magic 8.05 a warning message appeared that the drive geometry bla bla bla changed etc. etc.
Most other DOS boot level utilities never started. ( Hirens Boot CD V 8.1)

Erasing the flash BIOS of the PCI controller card and flashing it with r4250.bin file all went well! The system booted again.

What? What now? What is this? Can this company not even check their updates??? What crap is this?

Try running TestDisk and see if it can find your old partitions. :)
