Please help w/ HJT log - bestfriends.pif virus [inactive]

Last night, my friend was looking at away messages on AIM, and clicked on someone's that said something like "OMG look - www.allpictures.com/bestfriend.pif" As I realized this morning, my computer is acting crazy, my internet is super slow, and I have many pop-ups. Looks like I have the bestfriends virus.

This site has been incredibly helpful so far. I have run adaware and spybot and fixed the problems they found. I then downloaded HJT and ran the log. I tried to find the files named under the thread "bestfriends.scr removal guide", but I couldn't find any of the exact same files that were listed there. There were some close variations.

Anyways, I am pretty new at all of this, so here is my HJT log. Any help to fix all of this would be greatly appreciated. I am lost from here. Thanks! ~cathy

Once again, thanks for helping in advance! It is beyond my belief that I have found such a helpful site, just by looking thru some of the other posts.

    SINSTANTM.EXE

You have a lot of crap in there, but this seems to follow the same pattern as the other bestfriends EXEs.

Is this the only thing I need to delete? Should I delete all entries that contain this command? What else do I need to get rid of? I am at work right now, I will try this tonight when I get home on my computer.

    Thank you.

Delete all entries that contain that command, and delete the EXE file itself as the guide demonstrates.

After this, post your new log.

OK, here is what I have done so far:

I have fixed all entries (there were only 2) in the log that had "sinstantm.exe" in them by using hijackthis. I then booted the computer in safe mode, and deleted two files in the c: drive with this command in them, as it said to do in the guide. Then, following the guide, I went back into hijack this (in normal mode) and ran another scan. I deleted the final sinstantm.exe file in hijackthis. You said to post my new log here. My computer booted up faster, but it still is going EXTREMELY slow. Is the virus still there? What else can I delete? I want to delete as much as possible that I don't need. I am still not convinced this virus is gone.

I am staying up as long as possible tonight, I have to get this fixed. If anyone is online, please help!!

    Thanks,
    ~cathy

    What should I do next???
  • edited February 2005
Quick question while I'm waiting on my hijack log to be reviewed...is it normal to have 2000 files in your C:windows/system32 folder? That is how many I have there.
  • edited February 2005
I have posted my new log, I know there is still a bunch of garbage in there. Waiting to find out what to delete next.

In the meantime, I tried to open up my email today, through my account at school, and everytime I clicked on an inbox item to open the message, another screen opened like it was trying to open the message, but I got an "about:blank" title instead, and then the screen closed, not letting me open email. Anyone know anything about "about:blank"? I have heard this is a virus too.

I have 5903 files in system32. The system is not even two months old, and is obviously free of any spyware or viruses. For XP you should have in the thousands.

Fix those entries then find and delete the files listed above, reboot and post a new log.

Here is my new log. I checked and fixed the items you said to delete (the ones that showed up on the hijackthis scan). Some were not on there anymore, maybe because I deleted some spyware programs last night through the control panel (like wildtangent, etc.). Some of the items are still on the log, even though I checked and fixed them thru the program? I also went into safemode and deleted the file maxspeed.exe like you said to do.

I am still getting pop-ups here and there, though nearly not as many. What is next??
