Intel Bringing Centrino Model To The Desktop

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
Intel has announced plans to bring a new brand based on the highly successful Centrino model to the desktop PC arena.
The introduction of brands follows Intel's idea of "platformization," which sees a set of chips marketed under a single brand and offering a set of specific features. This branding allows the company to sell chips without relying solely on its main Pentium brand.

Centrino is the first brand that Intel has successfully executed on notebook computers. Manufacturers can only use the Centrino name on their products if they use three chips from Intel: these must include a Pentium M processor, a compatible Intel chipset, and a wireless chip. It is thought the desktop brand will follow a similar model and will be coupled with a large marketing push to get it established later this year. The name of this new brand has yet to be announced, but within Intel it is currently referred to as the "Desktrino" until a final naming decision is made.

You can expect to see the first models sporting the new brand available in the third quarter of this year. It is thought the processors manufacturers can choose from will be the new dual-core offerings.
