Registry issue? When starting a program I'm prompted to load install cd from another

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
Hi all, I have an annoying problem that maybe someone can help with.

When starting one program, I get a prompt to load an install cd for a totally different program that says the feature I'm trying to use is on a cd-rom or other removable disk that is not available and windows installer cannot continue. After pressing Cancel several times the program I'm starting finally opens. I'm not sure when this problem began, probably after running Registry Mechanic and not paying close enough attention to the repairs it was making. Ironically that is the program that causes the prompt for the other's install cd.

The Application Event Viewer shows errors, information and warnings with MsiInstaller as the source. The warnings indicate Detection of product '{D65C8E01-E7FF-4DB8-B3F0-C669081D3FA2}', feature 'ms' failed during request for component '{22056900-C842-11D1-A0DD-00A0C9054277}'.

There is a registry entry for the detected product under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\{D65C8E01-E7FF-4DB8-B3F0-C669081D3FA2}, but I can't find where the program I'm starting is calling for this one.

How do I find the cause of this problem?
Thanks in advance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is so weird. I have had the same problem for the last few weeks. In my case, it was my Logitech QuickCam which kept whining that it wasn't installed. (The camera was working fine.)

A few attempts at humoring the prompt by sticking in the Logitech disc got me nowhere. I put off working on a final fix to the problem because I figured it was going to take a complete registry wipe of anything Logitech. Since I have a Logitech mouse and keyboard, as well as the QuickCam, I figured I'd have to reinstall them all.

Earlier today I had the same thing pop up. I decided to stick the disc in one more time, just for kicks. And you know what? This time I have a new entry in Device Manager for Logitech QuickCam Messenger. I didn't do anything different from every other time I tried this, but for whatever reason it seems to have worked this time. (Knock wood.) I've gone back and tried all the programs and the glitch has not returned.

I know your problem is with a program and not hardware, but my advice is to try sticking the installation disc in that it's hollering for and setting up the troublesome program again.

I can't find the cd for the requested program. If possible I would like to get the registry straight anyway. If not, I'll just live with this annoyance until an upgrade comes out for the affected program.

Glad you got yours fixed! Thanks for the suggestion.

    Good Luck!

It gets even stranger. One of my sisters emailed me this afternoon. Every time she opens Outlook Express it asks for the MS Publisher CD.

I think maybe one of the recent MS bug "fixes" might have broken something...

There has to be some way to find these kind of problems in the registry. It took several months to find a solution to the search companion issue that service pack 2 caused. Probably be the same for these weird problems.

After deleting both of the programs associated with this problem, running several different registry cleaners, manually searching the registry and deleting any missed entries, I reinstalled the program that prompts the other's install cd and it's still doing it even though the program it's asking for has been completely removed. At least I thought so.

    I give up.

I, too, have been having similar problems as of late. Some programs seem to trigger the Microsoft OneNote 2003 program I have on my computer, saying that it is looking for the installer. Very annoying since it only occurs when that program is told to run from its shortcut. I can't figure it out either, but if either of you find a fix, be sure to post it.

NIGHTS, here's something you might want to try. It didn't help me but I'm not having trouble with a Microsoft program. A recommended fix from Microsoft is to use Microsoft Installer Clean Up Utility msicuu.exe. There is another verion for win98 with a similar name, msicu.exe. Notice the difference? Two u's in the version for NT, XP. You can find it at: Index of Microsoft Softlib Collection . I recommend reading Microsoft's recommended repair at their support center before using the utility, There are numerous threads at: Computing.net 's Xp forum that address this issue.

Hope this helps. I'm still looking for a solution since my two programs are not MS. Seems it would be pretty much the same though since the prompt is windows installer? I used the utility and deleted the instances of non-ms software anyway. No luck.

    Cheers!

[edit] After submitting the above information something else occurred to me. So I right-clicked on My Computer>Manage>>Services and Applications>Services and disabled Windows Installer. The prompt still appears but only for a short "blip" on the screen a couple of times, then my program starts. It's not a fix but it will do until I find one.
