cant install or boot xp

edited February 2005 in Hardware
Anybody knnow how to help me?

My sony laptop has b*****d up yet again and I haven't got the recovery disks for it.

I got a new hard drive and tried a fresh instal of win XP Pro, it gave me an error message but like the big idiot that I am, i never wrote it down GRRRRRRR!!!!!! then it shut down and wont boot up at all. All that comes up is the main

"sony"

screen then says

"press any key to boot by cd rom"

and the next screen says something along the lines of

"initializing system hardware to begin setup"

(flashes up a bit quick) then NOTHING but a BLANK screen :bawling:

Any help or ideas would be very VERY much appreciated

Thank you all for your time
Trevor

    No, its an OEM version

    Forgot to mention, Sorry!

when I was trying the clean instal I got past the formating / partitioning section and the error occured when it was copying files to the HDD about 2% of the way through.

gave up on it last night and tried again this evening. it reformated (quick) and started to install again. everything was going fine up until it come up with the select language etc screen on setup process when the screen went blank and nothing happened for ages (20 minutes or so) so had to restart the thing again and now when i try to re-install or enter recovery console the following error message comes up (same message for both options)

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check hard drive configuration, and for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart.

    *** STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF794a6d0, 0xF794A3CC, 0xf7015D1F)

    *** NTFS.SYS - ADDRESS F7015D1F Base at F6FCE000, Datestamp 41109eea

When I tried booting from the hard drive I got the following maessage

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT
restart with CDROM and press 'R' on the next screen

    Any ideas????
