Computer Illiterate (compared to you guys) needs help w/ spyware problem

Hi all...
I'm semi-literate when it comes to computers, but reading some of these posts has scared the crap out of me (dealing w/ editing the registry and all that). I have a serious spyware problem... someone was using my computer and seems to have opened it up to a hijacking program and now I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I have run all sorts of programs like adaware and spybot, spy sweeper, etc. and I also downloaded hijack this. My question at this point is that when you guys let me know what is wrong or what files shouldn't be there, do I just open HijackThis back up and check the boxes on the offending files? Well, whatever... you can see that I'll have no idea what to do unless you explain it like you're talking to a first grader! :) Thanks so much for any help... here's my log:

Okay, trying this again... my window keeps randomly closing on me, I have no idea what's going on. I think I fixed everything you said. I couldn't find a couple of things and one kept telling me access denied no matter what I tried (ending processes, etc.). It was C:\WINDOWS\irsvs aka pain in my ass! Thanks for your help, here's the new log:

Things are pretty much still going the same, lots of pop ups, programs that I can't get rid of in my add/remove (hsa, cool web search, etc.) What do you think, am I screwed? Thought this log looked shorter, but still kinda bad... I dunno! Thanks fo the help, I really appreciate it!! :)

Okay, computer is still really messed up. Weird html file covering up my background, none of my files will open and IE keeps shutting down randomly. I went through HJT a couple of times and ran a couple of scans to make sure I got everything... here's the latest one:

This is really pissing me off... things I fix with HJT are still on there. Does it just reload all the crap when I reboot? Thanks again!

You've got a nasty infection that is not going to go away easily. Let's take it one step at a time and we can get you fixed up.

    Step 1
Download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip and run it.

Check the I know what I'm doing box.

In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of the following files.

    aklsp.dll
    dolsp.dll

Select every instance of this file, but no others, and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.

When you are done click Finish>>.

    Step 2
Download(right click and select Save file as or Save link as): DelDomains.inf
    http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
    Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

This should remove those 015 entries.

    Step 3
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Okay, did what you said. It didn't look like DelDomains was doing anything when I clicked install. The screen just kinda refreshed, so maybe it was working? Anyway, here's the l2m log:

    L2MFIX find log 1.02b

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Alright, I may have to take my computer somewhere to get fixed b/c I think I finally may have killed it! I couldn't do the HJT fixes b/c those things didn't show up when I ran the scan. AND I downloaded the virus scan and ran that. It said it detected a virus and there were something like over 200 files infected. I think it "healed" some and couldn't do anything with others. My problem now is that after I ran the virus scan and restarted the computer, explorer doesn't run.... so I don't get a start menu, taskbar, icons, nothing... just my background comes up. When I ran the virus scan, explorer.exe came up as being infected, so I don't know if maybe that has something to do with it? So now I'm posting from my work computer, I couldn't even get onto the internet at home. Anyway, should I just give up on fixing it myself and take it to a professional? Help! Thanks so much for everything!!

You have a very bad infection that is very new. There are experts in other forums working on a fix for this right now, but as of today a lot of what is being tried is meeting with limited success. I am personally working two of these on another forum also and I'll be glad to work with you through this. Before you make your decision there's a few things you should note.

First of all, if you take your computer to a professional it's very unlikely that they will be able to fix it. This virus is just too new. They will probably just format your hard drive and reinstall everything, then charge you a few hundred dollars.

Second, this is a bad infection it will likely take several steps to get you back to normal. It may take a few days depending on how often we can exchange posts. If you are not willing to go without your computer for that long then you could consider formatting your hard drive and starting over from scratch.

As I said, I am working two of these already on another forum and they are both farther along than you. What that means is that I already know what is working and what's not for them and that could mean a lot less frustration for you.

There's a couple of things that you can try right now. First, you should be able boot into Safe Mode with Networking and gain access to the Internet. You should also still have LSPFix that you downloaded and ran earlier. If you run it, don't move any files, but just click Finish. That may restore your connection.

Try that and let me know how you want to proceed. If you want my help I will post more instructions once I hear back from you.

I guess I will try as much on here as I can seeing that I don't have a few hundred dollars to spend on fixing it! :) Right now, I'm in safe mode w/ networking and that has allowed me to get onto the internet. When I boot my computer in normal mode, everything loads, but all I see is the background page, so I have nothing to work with to even try to get onto the internet. I will try that Lspfix you said and see if that helps. Thanks for everything, I will keep following your instructions! :)

This virus infects your explorer.exe file, which is why you don't see your desktop. Once we get rid of the virus, we can restore that file for you and you'll get everything back. But for now you'll probably find it easier to work in Safe Mode.

Please follow the directions at this page to run Kapersky antivirus.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topict11662.html

This is the key to your problem. Let me know if you have any problems. If Kapersky crashes that's ok, just run it again. Keep running it until it comes back clean. Then post a new hijackthis log.

Okay, trying to download Kaspersky. It looks like every site in the English language can't be displayed? I don't know... I'm trying to get it right now, but it's going amazingly SLOW. I guess I'll let you know what happens! Thanks!

I finally understand why people like watching soap-operas. The implication being this thread is like a soap for a computer person. Anyway, good luck cleaning up your computer. I ran into a similar problem sometime ago which is what brought me to Short-Media.com in the first place. You’ll get rid of this thing and be that much savvier for the experience. Didn’t mean to get in the middle of you guys...

Thanks! I hope to be better off sometime in the near future. Anyway, got Kaspersky and ran it, detected something like 47 viruses. I just did whatever it recommended (deleting, quarantining.. how the hell do you spell that?). My problem is that Kaspersky won't update and it says the latest virus list that it has is from 11/2004, so that probably won't get everything, right? Everytime I try to update it just tells me that it can't connect to the update servers and to check my internet connection. I tried to download some updates from cnet.com, but it update with that either. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!! Here's the new HJT log:

You did everything just fine. The virus tries to keep you from connecting to Kapersky to download updates. Now let's see about getting rid of all the spyware this virus is downloading.

Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

Download(right click and select Save file as or Save link as): DelDomains.inf
    http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
    Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

Please download CWShredder but don't run it yet.
    http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWSInstall.exe

    Download Ad-aware SE from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it. First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files. Exit Adaware for now.

Make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Alright... I think I did everything you said. My only problem is that the CWShredder caused the big, blue screen to come up every time I ran it. Soooo, needless to say, I couldn't get through that. Here's the new log, but I must have missed some stuff b/c all the pop ups and everything are baaaack! :) I know if I run adaware and Kaspersky again, they'll come up with stuff...

Let's clean you up again and see if Spyware Blaster and Firefox will help keep you from getting infected again.

Download(right click and select Save file as or Save link as): DelDomains.inf
    http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

To use: Close all open browsers
    Right-click DelDomains.inf and select: Install

This should remove those 015 entries.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

    Internet Optimizer
    180 Solutions
    PowerScan
    Side Find
    Viewpoint Manager

Launch Adaware and check for updates. Look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Let me know how it's going. Is Kapersky still finding lots of infected files?
  • edited March 2005
Well, it's going! Kaspersky detected 1172 viruses this time through and I still can't run CWShredder, it gets a little ways through and then I get the scary blue screen. Here's the new log:

Does Kapersky come back clean if you scan now?
  • edited March 2005
I've tried to remove those 02 lines three or four times. I fix them with Hijack this and then I run it again and they're there. Also, Kaspersky comes back semi-clean, still finds files here and there and still comes up with explorer.exe saying unable to disinfect. Well, the pop ups started coming back, so I decided to edit this post and run HJT again for a new log... as I suspected, a bunch of crap is back!! Here's the new log:
