Now that I got it up and running

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
with brand new hard drive and Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. My question is how do I go about finding individual drivers for these controllers-Ehternet, multimedia audio and SMbus. I'm running out of patience cause I can't find these things and unfortunately don't have a disk with the motherboard drivers. The mother board is a K7 systems board with Spares No 261671-001 in a Compaq Presario 6000 and an AMD Athlon, I think 1700+(1.45 Ghz).

Can anyone here help me find these drivers?

TheBaron seems to have you covered. One thing I'll say for Compaq, once you get to the right page you should be able to find everything you need.

Since the computer boots, we'll send this along to the Drivers Forum. :)

This is the best I can come up with on the Compaq

    Product Name: Compaq Presario
    Processor: AMD Athlon XP 1700
    Processor Speed: 1467/266 Mhz
    Precessor Stepping: 662
    Cache Size (L1/L2) 128/256 KB
    Integrated MAC: 0040CA2BA8A
    System ROM: 676Y4 v2.00
    Chasis Serial Number: U213KF8ZA671
    Asset Tracking Number: U213KF8ZA671

I went into setup to find this stuff. Is any of this of any help?

Look on the case for a model# tag. It could be anywhere, including the bottom of the case or even inside. :)

It's a Compaq Presario 6000. But, is it a 6000EA, 6000T or 6000Z? And if all these Compaq Models look different from each other than it looks like a Z to me. That is what I don't know. I looked all over that computer for the Model #, inside, underneath, on top and behind things such as the front by removing it.

I should be able to install these drivers from the device manager for this hardware once I've logged on to the Internet, but can't. I can find these drivers OK, but they come in a bundle with other software such as IDE controllers and video controllers and after what I've went through recently this bundle scared me off. I would rather have the individual drivers.

I don't have a driver for the multimedia audio controller in my homebuilt, but have a SB16 in it. It works just fine. I have a gazillion SB cards and software disks and will try one of them out. Hopefully it will work OK. But if it doesn't than I'll buy a new one that is compatible to XP and install it. But, I would rather have the onboard sound, because it is totally awesome and puts SB to shame.

How important is it not to have an SMbus driver making this controller inoperative? I really don't care all that much for Ethernet, since that was just the beginning of my troubles. I have dial-up on my Compaq along with an updatable antivirus software, firewall, spam killer and some other feature I never heard of. Even though this will drive me nuts and I have to login everytime I turn on the computer, I feel like it has a much better chance of something bad not getting in now.

From what I have read Windows XP is very vulnerable to worms, germs and viruses, which is the main reason among other reasons, I have stayed away from it all this time

I found the model of my computer. Though it says Compaq Presario 6000, the model number is Pres ZZTOP/Pine Amer CTO Nvidia nforce board. Guess I didn't want to believe this was a model number.

Realized that I had to install external boards after the new installation of XP. I got rid of one question mark by installing an SB16 board. XP had drivers for it already so I didn't have to install any software and now I got noise. I will also have to install the Ethernet board and I'm not a bit familiar with an SMbus. whatever that is. But, I don't even have one setup on my homebuilt either-yellow question mark-and didn't even realize it.
