streamlined pc

edited February 2005 in Hardware
hi there
i'm hoping to build a very basic (and cheap) pc for the sole purpose of providing music visualisations in a mate's VW camper. all it needs to do is provide the processing power to create the vis from an input source and display it on a screen. i'm aware of windows ce and embedded versions, but this seems like a more pro answer than i'm capable of (both financially and technically). i know its possible to use old pc parts to run a basic pc out of a shoebox, but could it be used/adapted for this purpose?
any help would be much appreciated,
regards

With a cheapo MicroATX or MiniITX MB, memory, CPU, optical drive (optional) and hard drive, you could put together a basic system for not a lot of money.

For size purposes, this Motherboard measures only a little over 9" on a side. You can find them even smaller. The Audio, Video, and LAN is built right into the board. If you have any basic carpenty skills (or know someone who does) you could build a poor man's version of a rackmount case for under $20. Add a power supply and you're all set. The entire rig could fit under a car seat.

You'd probably want an LCD monitor to save space. If you have (or know anyone with) some electronic skills you might even be able to find a broken laptop and salvage the screen.

This project is on my "To Do" list for when I get the money. You might get some ideas here. :)
