Skype Expands To Wi-Fi/Cell Phones

edited February 2005 in Science & Tech
Skype's VoIP software is to be pre-installed on i-mate wireless and mobile handsets from Carrier Devices.
Newly manufactured i-mate PDA2 and PDA2K Pocket PC phones will come with Skype's software for making calls over the Internet. The handsets will be equipped out of the box for users to start making Skype calls.

The phones use Windows Mobile 2003 software for Pocket PCs and have both GSM/GPRS and Wi-Fi. Carrier Devices also plans to put the Skype software in its i-mate JAM, a smaller version of the handset. With the Skype software, users can make calls over a broadband Internet connection through a Wi-Fi network, bypassing the GSM/GPRS provider.

Skype makes peer-to-peer VoIP software that lets users make voice calls to any other Skype user on the Internet for free. Customers can also make calls to fixed-line and mobile phones in countries around the world at a fraction of the cost of conventional international phone calls. Skype's software can be installed on some other Windows-based phones.

Skype have been heavily critisised here in Aus - APC (Australian Personal Computing) has a long article this month warning users off the proprietry implementation of Voip that Skype uses .... P2P VoiP is not true VoiP ... the last line of the article is "Skype is the latest in a long procession of greedy companies trying to sell ice to eskimos. Don't fall for it"

If anyone is interested in reading the article it's not online but if asked I could scan it

    just been using skype recently.

the conference calling is a treat for me

as is using my own bandwidth for long distance

proggie is a lil cranky to install and set up for some.

phoning is duplex (Can hear both sides talking)

it's a bit of a resource hog so older comps

tend to have probs. we got it workin

on a 300 tho. what am i missing?

    heres the download site,

they have a linux and mac version

as well which seems like good marketing

    http://www.skype.com/download/

they also had one bundled with

a p2p (kazaa?) that we found

to be a real resource hog.
