Intel today began shipping an upgraded version of its 64-bit Xeon DP processor. The new chip, code-named Irwindale, integrates 2 MByte L2 cache which is twice the memory of the previous Xeon (Nocona).
Intel claims an 18 percent performance gain and greater scalability.

The new Xeon DP is compatible with Nocona platforms, supports DDR2-400 memory and PCI Express, the company said.

Intel plans to introduce its Xeon MP processor, code-named Potomac, "within 90 days and up to 8 MByte L3 cache."Cranford", a Xeon variant with 1 MByte L2 cache will be launched simultaneously and target entry-level four-way server platforms. Both processors will be offered in the framework of the E8500 "TwinCastle" chipset that will be carried over for dual-core Xeons later this year.
